About Matthew
I bring compassion for a student, and love to pass on the passion for learning. I have a sixth sense when it comes to understanding how to break down information in a way that excites and stimulates the imagination and helps a student learn the material in a way that they'll understand.
In a session, this approach feels steady and uncomplicated. My techniques are simple and straightforward, and grounded in practical steps to attain a goal.
I love sharing passion for learning.
My mom asked me to tutor my younger sister, and it went so well I kept it up for many years. I was later asked by a college professor to tutor my peers in a philosophy class on complex topics. A group of fellow students met a few times, and they all improved their scores significantly.
I feel that I have a natural talent for teaching, and I love to do it.
I believe I have a gift to understand the way a person learns and understands, and to see where a person is, and be able to communicate with them effectively to help them reach their goals. I love the challenge of breaking down information in a way that makes sense to the student.
I have a philosophy degree and am an avid reader. I maintain an interest in so many different topics, and enjoy relating the topics to one another in a way that clarifies knowledge.

I love meeting new students!
My first step is a brief conversation about the student's goals. We then gain understanding about where the student is now, and create a few steps to get from here to there. This process feels natural and easy, and comes with an attitude of service for the student, and absolutely no judgement - acceptance and compassion are the bedrock of education. I constantly seek to help a student learn to learn, so that I am no longer needed and the student can thrive on their own.
I have worked with students of all ages, from elementary school age teaching gardening, cooking, and nutrition, to college students teaching philosophy. I enjoy teaching most subjects, because the process of learning feels invigorating to me, and I like sharing that passion.
Ask the teacher if they love to learn, and how they find the process of learning.
It's one thing to offer a student "the answer," another entirely to show someone how to find an answer themselves. It's also necessary that the process of discovery feels fun.
I met online with a student who was studying for an essay-based standardized test. She was bright, but her insights were lost because her essays lacked organization and a logical flow.
She and I had a fun time looking through practice essays she had written and finding the logical thread of her perspective, and then organizing the essays accordingly. Her essays improved quickly. Furthermore, she reported that her general thinking gained more forward momentum and power: she had changed as a person, and felt she could represent herself more forcefully in the world.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is the next small step in the process of fulfilling this need? What is my goal? What else can I try as an experiment to see if it will get me closer to my goal? What is an approach I haven't tried yet? How can I think of this problem in another way?
