I usually introduce myself and have my students do the same. I also encourage them to tell me what thief expectations are for the class. I believe that by doing this it creates a friendly and welcoming environment for the child.
I work with mixed ability children. I embrace average, slow and fast learners.
I would encourage that student to first do a background check on the teacher. Find out about his/ her past performance and qualification.
My most recent fond event was when I made a jeopardy game for one of my students who was have a little difficulty understanding number operations. We enjoyed playing that game and of course he was able to better understand the concept.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I believe that they they to think about what they really want to accomplish from the class before talking about their needs. They need to think about what they don't know and what they want to know.
