About David
Credentials: Hello! I am David Sloane. I am a 24 year old recent graduate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois. I currently work as a Hydraulic Technologies Territory Manager for Parker Hannifin, a large engineering firm. I have been tutoring for 8 years at both a tutoring center and at customers' houses. I have tutored K-12 math and science, all AP math and science courses, and SAT/ACT prep.
My philosophy: I strongly believe in a personal approach to learning. In my 8 years of of tutoring ages ranging from 7-20 year olds, I have developed an intuition for understanding what makes a student "tick". Teachers with 30+ students together are typically forced to apply the same method of teaching towards their entire classroom. Unfortunately, many students (especially young boys) struggle in the classroom because they require different outlets to express their hidden genius! Furthermore, I don't believe in "finishing the homework and moving on". I want to build a strong foundation of understanding around a problem by dissecting it from all angles. Teaching a student how to learn and problem solve is just as, if not more, important than learning "how to add fractions".
During this time where kids are forced to remote learn, I know parents need all the help they can get keeping their kids on track. Please feel free to reach out to me any time. I can help remotely or meet at your home, and would be willing to work weekends.
(concealed information)
I feel my approach to teaching is unique in that I take the student's interests and hobbies into account. I enjoy spending time with and getting to know the student, and find joy in seeing them develop.
When I was 15, I began as a student of AP Chemistry at my local tutoring center. The owner of the facility observed my methods of learning and my relationship with the tutors. She believed these skills would be valuable to her business and invited me to join her team.
I tutored students of all ages at a tutoring center and at-home tutoring for almost 8 years. I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering from a top engineering university. Furthermore, I currently work in a fluid mechanics related technical field doing oil and gas work. I played sports and instruments all throughout school, so I understand the importance of school/hobby balance.

1. Learn about the student. How are they performing in school? What is their attitude towards school? What sports do they play? What interests do they have outside of school? All of this information will help me build a profile around your student's unique method of learning
2. Determine the student's current mathematical aptitude. This roughly translates into their scientific aptitude. I do this by observing how they go about solving their homework problems. What work do they show? What steps do they skip? At what point in a problem do they get stuck? Are they truly analyzing the problem or are they just following the memorized steps? What happens when I add a small variation to the given problems?
3. End every session with action items. I like to have the student help determine the action items and then bring the parents in. Students are more likely to uphold their end of the deal if they aren't simply "assigned" it.
4. We begin every session with 5 minutes going over the last session's action items.
I have worked with a wide range of students including the following:
-Ages 7-20
-Straight A students
-Struggling Students
-ACT/SAT Students
