About Madison

I have experience teahcing in a classroom setting and tutoring 1-1 or in small groups. I have a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Education from the University of Minnesota. I love classroom teaching, but there is an element to 1-1 work and small group work that I've always enjoyed immensely. My favorite part of teaching has always been seeing students reach their full potential, and exploring their personal curiosities. I specialize in bringing student's passions into their learning, and having the time to customize student's educational experiences to their needs is very important to me. I have experience in online and in-person tutoring with kids from ages 5 to 12. I believe the real magic of learning happens when kids have time and space to learn at their own pace, and I'm happy to be any additional support they need to be successful in their goals.

I love the "ah-ha!" moment when a lightbulb apears over a student's head. It's so cool to see their confidence in themselves and their abilities grow as they see thier own progress. Getting past the "I can't" mentality is one of my favorite parts of teaching.

My first job when I was 16 was as a swimming instructor, and I quickly learned that I loved teaching and helping people achieve their goals.

I have a Bachelor of Science with a major in Elementary Education, and a Master of Education from the University of Minnesota. In addition to a year of Student Teaching in an online 3rd grade classroom, I've been a long-term substitute, teaching in a 1st and 3rd grade classrooms for the better part of a school year. I have also taught at a pre-k level (3 and 4 year olds). I have a tier 3 Minnesota Elementary Education License in Kindergarten- 6th grade education.

My first step is getting to know my students. I like to start by playing a game, or doing a craft while I get to know them, their study habits, their goals and their passions. Then I suggest a plan for how we can work together to incorporate those passions into their goals. Depending on the goals, I might administer a short preliminary assessment or ask for previous work to see where the student's starting point is. Afterwards, we work from there.

I have worked with students from ages 4 to 13, with varying physical, cognitive, sensory, and language needs.

Find a teacher who cares about your aspirations and interests. If you're feeling unheard and can't see your own growth, it might be time to look for a different teacher.

I was recently working with a student on their anger management difficulties; every morning when the class game wouldn’t go their way, they would get so upset they would flip a desk or throw a chair- not a great way to begin the day. I worked with them to brainstorm some calming techniques, which I was proud to see they were actively practicing during our games. I was proud to look over and see them taking deep breaths, or asking for a check-in about their anger, or stepping out of the game when they felt too dysregulated to play. I was very proud of the emotional regulation that student was able to practice.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
When talking to your teacher about your needs, think about the following:

What am I good at?

What is frustrates me?

What feels overwhelming?

What have I done to try and problem-solve on my own?

What would I like to be able to do?

From there we can build some goals together to make things that are hard become things that were hard.
