About Notactive
What I enjoy most about tutoring is seeing the progress in my students, no matter how small. I work to adapt unique approaches to tutoring each of my students such that they feel most comfortable reinforcing the material their teachers have given in class. However you learn best, I have experience working with students from middle school to college across all levels of understanding and will work to get you where you need to be.
I strongly believe that while teaching and tutoring go hand in hand, they are not one and the same. Teaching is the introduction of new information often in a classroom setting and through a single individual as presented to a large group. Tutoring is significantly more individualized and focuses on the reinforcement of knowledge that already exists within students, but that may require a personalized approach to solidify understanding. In other words, the tutor is the bridge between the student and the teacher.
When I was a senior in high school, I volunteered as a general tutor in the center. After helping a handful of students, I wanted to continue this path and so pursued the tutoring job at Merrimack.
I graduated Summa Cum Laude in December of 2021 with a BA in Mathematics from Merrimack college. Prior to this, I received my high school diploma from Littleton High School on the high honor roll. When at Merrimack, I was a member of the Honors Program and a Peer Tutor at the Tutoring & Math Center on campus. I started this position in the spring of my freshman year with the recommendations of multiple professors. In my senior year, I was elected to the Peer Tutor Council to oversee training and work with the professional staff and director to make the center work best for the students on campus. Since graduation, I have worked as a private tutor in the surrounding area of my hometown and have helped students with exam prep, track acceleration, and filling in the gaps.

At a preliminary session, I have some baseline goals I wish to achieve. First and foremost is determining whether my tutoring skills are what is needed or whether the student should seek help elsewhere. It is important that the student feel comfortable being wrong and asking questions as a tutor, in my book, is there to help reinforce, not to judge. In addition, I find looking back at all recent school work can help paint a picture of where the student's understanding of math is and where any disconnect may be. By looking at both their failures and successes, I can pick out how the student learns best and develop techniques to present information with which they struggle from a better angle.
I have worked with students from middle school to college with a variety of learning styles. I have worked with students from those with learning challenges to those who have a natural inclination to the subject and wish to accelerate beyond their peers.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
One of the top questions I think students should ask is "How do I learn?" You may be a visual learner who does well with Geometry, but struggles with more abstract concepts; a more mental mathematician who finds it hard to put their work on paper; a collaborative learner who prefers group work; etc. Whatever your style, it is important you consider this question so that lessons can be adapted to fit your needs.

Brian is a great tutor who makes it easy to understand and fun to learn. He taught me the entire school year curriculum of Algebra 2 in 3 months only having 1 lesson a week.

My standard rate is $40/hr. and I typically recommend preliminary sessions to be one hour so as to avoid burnout. Beyond this, I have had students who prefer longer sessions as well as multiple one-hour sessions in a week and am happy to accommodate them.
