About Nyla

I may be only 15 but I have attended academically rigorous programs throughout my educational career. Currently, I attend Menlo School in Atherton. I also have experience teaching Water Polo to younger children. With me, your children can learn how to study efficiently, a habit I found very important as a National Level Athlete.

I am a high school student looking to connect with others through learning. I believe the best way to learn is through teaching. My younger sister has often asked for help, and I have loved explaining the process.

Because of the current pandemic, everybody who is currently in school is suffering. Learning styles have been disrupted and I would like to help where I can.

I started assistant coaching for my sports club when I met the level requirement. When I first started playing water polo, I remember that the assistant coaches were, to me, the coolest people in the world. Practices became much more fun if they were there, and they really helped improve my skill set. I wanted the opportunity to provide that same help for younger water polo players. Water polo is also a less common sport, especially for girls, and it's always good to encourage more players to join.

I attended Woodland School for grades k-8. Woodland was an academically rigorous school, and I have benefited greatly from it. Last year, when applying to high schools I received a 100% acceptance rate into the top four private high schools in the Bay Area. I chose to go to Menlo, and my academics have never benefitted more. I also have experience working with younger kids as I helped coach 12 and under teams for my water polo club. I got in the water with them and taught them important skills, as well as helping run drills for the coach.

I first like to get to know the student, as someone's personality says a lot about how they work best. Next, I like to discuss what specific help they need. Even I sometimes think I have no idea what to do, but by slowing down and really thinking about the task at hand, you can understand much more. Furthermore, it is important to discuss long term goals during the first session. This is mainly for me, so I can know how best to help the student.

When looking for a tutor, make sure they understand you not only as a student but as a person. They need to be able to work with your learning style. Furthermore, in order for a tutor to be beneficial to you, the student needs to be able to spend however many hours with that tutor and still be productive. This is the reason that best friends don't always make the best tutors. I know for a fact that if my best friend tried to tutor me, we wouldn't get much done.

Very recently, my family got a little Shih-Tzu puppy. His name is Mocha, and he is the newest member of our family. While he is adorable and so fun, he also is a puppy. Caring for a puppy requires work and responsibility. You have to potty-train them and teach them not to bite. Getting Mocha has made me realize the benefits of responsibility and work. It has also made me realize that my backyard is very cold at 5 in the morning.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
First, try and understand what the problem is asking. In doing this, you advance to the next step, which is understanding what you need to complete the problem. Then, you need to understand what to do in order to find what you need for the problem. If you aren't able to do any of these steps, then it might be time to ask your teacher. But before you go up to them think of a specific question. Instead of just saying "I don't understand this problem.", try asking "I don't understand how you are supposed to find (thing) in order to solve this problem." This not only shows that you are thinking about the problem and trying, but also helps the student understand exactly what they don't have.
