I enjoy learning how students think. I find that when students have trouble with a subject, their conception of the task often makes sense in their own minds, but they have trouble expressing as much. I take great joy in helping students work through a problem, and in aiding in any way I can to give clear language to their thought processes.
I have always enjoyed working with people, particularly in conjunction with traditional academic subjects. While in the military, I began assisting my platoonmates in applying for college, and then began offering primers in what to expect from first-year courses. This awakened a passion for helping people become the best students they can possibly be.
I have experience with student teaching from the grade school level up through high school, and have taken several upper-division courses in education. As a Marine NCO, teaching and training junior Marines was one of my primary responsibilities. This instruction covered military skills, as well as more general life skills such as personal finance, reading comprehension, and effective social engagement. I have also worked as a camp counselor.

I like to have the student present me with an example of the kind of assignment that is giving them trouble. I like to have them explain what they believe they are being asked to do, what kind of instruction they have been given in how to address the assignment, and how they would go about forming a solution or answer. I then try to identify where the problem is, and work directly on that component. In mathematics, for example, a student may have a perfect understanding of simple computations but may struggle with the order of operations. In writing, a student may be able to form a thesis but may struggle to organize their thoughts.
While student teaching, I worked with third-grade up through the high school level. As a camp counselor, my campers were between second and fourth grade. In the military, I worked with adult learners whose ages ranged from eighteen to thirty, and who came from a wide variety of educational backgrounds.
I would suggest finding someone who has some real-world experience with the subjects in which you are interested.
I am an avid outdoorsman and several years ago, completed a twelve-day hike through the Annapurna range in Nepal.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think the answer to this will vary depending on the subject. Generally, however, I think a student should ask themselves what they believe they are being asked to do, and, if possible, ask themselves where along the way they believe they are getting stuck. I believe the more clearly a student can explain their thought process, the easier it is to understand what is causing the problem.
