About Shauna

I am passionate about sharing knowledge, and have taught students at the elementary through collegiate level. My most recent experience is working as an adjunct faculty member in the Elecrical Engineering Department at Portland State University, where I created and taught courses in the field of electrical power systems. The majority of my tutoring experience has been in mathematics, ranging from pre-algebra to advanced calculus. I also have experience in tutoring English and helping students expand their essay writing skills etc.

A little about me: I spent my early college years studying English, History and Philosophy, before transferring into the STEM field. I earned my BS in Renewable Energy Engineering from the Oregon Institute of Technology in 2011, and my MS (with thesis) in Electrical Engineering from Portland State University in 2014, where I also worked as a tutor and teaching assistant for various STEM classes. Because my masters thesis contained a novel discovery, I was given the option to transition my MS into a Ph.D., but decided instead to enter the workforce. In 2014 I accepted a newly created role at Portland General Electric as their first ever Smart Grid Design Engineer. Two years later I transitioned into a role in Integrated Resource Planning at the same company, and also accepted an adjunct faculty position at Portland State University. I recently accepted a position at the City of Portland, designing the electrical backbone within their municipal water system.

That moment when a student realizes their own capability. While tutoring certainly requires the ability to explain your expertise in a variety of ways to fit individual learning styles, it also heavily depends on skilled psychological coaching. The vast majority of students that I encounter need to be shown that they are fully capable of learning the subject before they can accept the information.

I began informally tutoring my peers in high school. When I was in college I was offered a more formal role as a peer tutor, and also began working with elementary- and middle- school kids in after school tutoring programs. In grad school I was hired as a tutor and teaching assistant for undergraduate courses. After finishing my Masters degree, I missed teaching, so I began formally creating and teaching college courses, as well as tutoring my nieces in their middle- and high-school curriculum.

I begin with an assessment of the student's goals and learning style to determine if we are a good fit. If I believe that I can help the student, I then create a learning plan with accessible milestones that are used to reach the learning goal. From there, we collaborate to schedule meeting times, and I provide my contact information for any needs that pop-up outside of regularly scheduled tutoring hours.

All kinds. Please see previous question.

Make sure that you feel comfortable telling your teacher when you don't understand something or need it to be explained a different way.

I recently had a student that was struggling to understand derivatives. It really wasn't that she didn't understand, it was that she believed the subject matter was beyond her. We spent some time breaking the subject into smaller elements that were approachable for her, then put them together into the larger framework.
