About Andrea

Hello Fellow Learners!

My name is Andrea. I have studied a variety of general education subjects, receiving top grades in all of them, and I have earned an associates degree in Art New Media (related to graphic design). There's always more for me to learn and grow in. I have come to appreciate that we all have different learning styles and paces, and I seek to discover ways of making topics as understandable as possible for each individual.

I have years of experience homeschooling/tutoring children from age 3 and up in the fundamentals of reading, writing, arithmetic, English, history, science, and biblical studies. I was home-schooled, and after graduating from high school, I taught my youngest siblings using a variety of curriculum and resources. For example, I incorporated music videos on certain topics like phonics or grammar to help them easily remember information through song. While working as a nanny, I also tutored children in reading and writing and assisted with homework for elementary ages. Also, while I haven't expressly tutored special needs children, I have experience caring for young children with autism, and I'd welcome the opportunity to come along side your special needs child in his/her education journey as well. Children have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I delight in encouraging their growth.

While attending college, I was given the opportunity to tutor fellow students in class on how to do assignments and use software. I also was invited to join the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa because of my academic standing. With a degree in Art New Media and having worked as a independent video producer, I have experience using Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro, and Acrobat. I also am familiar with Microsoft Word and Publisher and can tutor use of these programs as well as basic computer skills.

If you have any questions or would like to schedule a lesson, feel free to contact me! I look forward to meeting you.

Helping people is one of my favorite things, and so is making information easier to understand. I know the frustration of not being able to understand something, and I want to help allievate that for others. Education is the stepping stone to the future; just think about how wide the world becomes for a person when they learn to read! Tutoring gives me the opportunity to be a small part of supporting others to success.

Having seven younger siblings who were all homeschooled, tutoring came by default. :)  I also was my youngest two siblings' homeschool teacher for grades preschool - 4th.

At my local church, I taught Sunday School to children ages 3-5yrs. It gave me additional experience taking complex subjects and making them simple to understand.

I spent several years homeschooling my youngest siblings (from age 3 and up) in foundational subjects like reading, writing, math, English, history, science, and biblical studies.  While working as a nanny, I also tutored preschool-age children in reading and writing and assisted with homework for elementary ages.

When I start working with a new student, I first seek to become a friend and learn what interests the student so I can try to incorporate that into how I explain/present material.  I look over the assignment/problem and ask the student what they need help with. I understand that when things are difficult, it's hard to become motivated to do them, so I want to make learning the information as enjoyable and interesting as possible. This will look different for each student based on personality, interests, and age.  Some might thrive with straight-forward explanation, others might find it easier to understand a concept through a related music video.  I seek to find out what works so my new student can succeed!

Students ages 3yrs through college age.

I was tutoring one of the little girls I babysat, and I wanted to have her practice writing.  She wasn't in the mood, so I instead asked her if she wanted write special letters to her parents that she could decorate.  She thought that that sounded like a fun game, so she dictated what she wanted to say, and I had her write her name and their names.  The adorable letters she ended up making for her parents made us all smile, and she practiced writing without even knowing it.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
"What am I frustrated with?"

"What kind of help do I want/need?"

"What do I need to succeed at this assignment or class?"
