About Sheila

Light your love for mathematics with an award-winning teacher and Ph.D. mathematician with 20 years of classroom experience at all levels, from elementary to university.

Doing mathematics is a process of exploration, discovery, insight, and analysis, not a march of correct answers. As a published, research-active mathematician, I know how much failure it takes to have successful, mathematical ideas. Being good at math doesn't mean always getting it right the first time -- or even the tenth.

In the teaching of mathematics, there's no substitute for deep mathematical understanding. Students at all levels have questions about the material they are learning that reveal rich and complex connections to other areas of mathematics the world beyond. I am able to honor their curiousity and insight.

I bring my unconditional regard for my students and my love of mathematics and the journey of learning it to every learninging environment, and I hope to share them with you.

About the lesson

Before diving into mathematics, it's important for me to know what is important to the student. What are they passionate about? Why are they taking the course that they are taking? Understanding the student's interests, drives, and goals allows me to tailor our work and the examples I choose toward that individual student.

Next, I like to get a sense of where they are with the material they have studied in the past and of their current course. Often, the chalenges a student is experiencing come from a past misunderstanding.

Once we know what to do and who is doing it, the student and I agree on goals and a plan to meet those goals. This process might be formal or informal, depending on the student.
