Every student is different. First, I get to know how they learn. Second, I develop a strategy to best help them understand their math problems. Some students need more help. Some students need to be challenged in order to learn. My general strategy includes giving an example and asking my student to do a similar problem by themselves as much as possible. Then I ask them to explain to me what they did. If they were wrong, then I correct them and explain how I would approach the problem.
