About Ryan
I love people. I will be there for you every step of your learning journey. You have a question during the week practicing? Lets text or talk about it. Or.... do a spontaneous 5 minute check up session. I have years of teaching experience with all ages and all types of folks. I have 2 degrees in music education. :)
I enjoy teaching music and reaching people through music. I love the moment when a student attains their goals and is able to play their first or tenth song! Music is for everyone whether we are playing ourselves, learning an instrument, singing, or listening. The process is more important than the final outcome. It is the the process and the baby steps of success that I enjoy witnessing. I feel satisfaction when another student is enjoying what they are striving for. Let's start your musical journey together!
When I was in high school, I always knew I was destined to be a music educator. I had many teachers growing up who shaped my playing in a variety of styles, and my identity as a person. One of my greatest memories in high school was traveling with my youth orchestra overseas to Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe. The musical directors of my youth orchestra provided me with an oppurtunity to perform a major show piece accompanied by the orchestra. I will forever be in debt to grade school teachers, private teachers, orchestra conductors, and college professors. Teaching is something that is near and dear to me. I feel passionate about passing on my knowledge to future musicians and educators.
I have a degree in Music Education and a degree in violin performance from SUNY FREDONIA. I have a masters in Music Education from Kent State University. I taught public school orchestra for 6 years but resigned to be a freelance teacher, musician and singer songwriter. I also play mandolin, guitar, and play a variety of genres. I'm classically trained and also play bluegrass jazz Irish, and really have my own unique style that I've developed throughout my playing career. The needs of the student are number one priority....everyone is unique and anyone can learn music and hone their innate creativity through music. It's all about the process and how good you feel while doing it. I enjoy working with students according to their own individual experiences. I strive to help a student be inspired and stay inspired.
I've worked with all age groups from 3 years old up to college level. I had an extensive tenured career as a 4th and 6th grade string instructor in a public school district in Albany, NY. I've had upwards of 100 private students. I enjoy teaching students who need a solid foundation, intermediate students, students with special needs, and advanced students looking to take their playing to the next level.
I've worked with students who prefer reading sheet music, and who play by ear.
A student should want a student with not only teaching experience, but a variety of playing styles under their belt. There are endless possibilites to explore on the violin, viola, and mandolin. Also, listening is really important! What have you listened to recently that left you inspired??
A recent event that I can say I am proud of was an album release concert with my progressive bluegrass band Blind Crow. It was an honor to record my original misic and collaborate with those fellas. There is something so rewarding about teaming up musicially with other musicians. The energy on stage is so wonderful and connecting with an audience is even better!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should express what they would like to learn! It's all about the student and the teacher can then nurture these interests and perhaps offer some advice in regards to the journey of these ambitions.

Should I be reading sheet music or learning by ear?
How do I find an affordable, quality instrument that's right for me?
What intrigues me about learning a musical instrument?
Do I need to learn some basic technique before jumping in to the music I would like to learn or that I interested in?
How long will it take to learn my instrument? ANSWER: YOU'LL NEVER STOP LEARNING :))
