About Sam
i'm not a good sales person. Instead of words from me, here's a comment from a student: ..."Sam is a great instructor. He really clearly lays out the materials and helps you work through your questions. Sam makes sure you have good notes to reference for the future and caters the class to how you want to be making photos by making it relevant to what you are already doing. I walked away from the class with an improved understanding of camera operations, and I am really happy with the pictures I am able to make. I look at photographs I see around me in a whole new light now. I would recommend this class to anyone looking to improve and understand how to get the pictures you want..."
I enjoy working with photographers to help them "find their own way" of "being a photographer". I'm here to provide the photographers that I work, with guidance with their studies and their practice of photography in order to help them be better photographers in terms of whatever "being a better photographer" means to them.
I started teaching friends, then I stated teaching professionally via community education classes. When I moved to Washington D.C., I continued teaching professionally at The Washington School of Photography and then started my own series of classes.
I've studied photography at the community college level as well as photography specific places of learning. These include the International Center of Photography and the School Of Visual Arts.

When contacted by someone I've never worked with before, I like to have a discussion about what they're currently doing as a photographer in terms of what they like to photograph, what equipment they use as well as how they use their equipment and what they'd like to get out of their time with me.
I've worked with students at all different levels. From beginner to advanced/professional practitioners.

I just finished taking 4 classes with Sam and he's the first photography instructor that clearly explained the fundamentals of photography to me. Aperture & shutter speed, etc.
If you want to learn how to use your DSLR camera, he's the guy to sign up for.I just finished the beginner class. I didn't know how much I didn't know. This was a nuts a bolts course on using your camera in Manual mode. You'll begin to understand light and how it affects your photos, and how you can manipulate it to create the photos that you want.
I've watched online tutorials on photography in the past, and the information never stuck. Because of the small class size we got hands on teaching I was able to get a much better understanding of my camera.
I recommend this class for anyone that wants to learn to take better photos. I will be signing up for his intermediate class.I finished Sam's Introductory Class last week and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to take better photos. I thought I knew a little about using my camera in manual mode, setting the aperture and shutter speed, and getting a good exposure before taking the class, but I was able to take those skills to a whole new level. Sam is a wonderful teacher. He's direct and to the point.
