About Johanna
Science is discovery! It's exciting, engaging, and fascinating. And that is exactly how I teach it to my students.
A bit more about myself and my science tutoring background:
I taught a broad range of scientific topics from physics to chemistry to the biology of our brains in a fun and creative way during a summer camp in 2018 and was so gratified to see my campers leave with the realization that science is fun.
I have been helping friends and peers through university courses for over 4 years.
I volunteer regularly at schools in my community to hang out and just chat about science (neuroscience in particular!)
I live in downtown/NW Portland and prefer to meet students at their coffee shop of choice anywhere in the greater Portland area. I am also happy to tutor online.
As native English and German speaker, I am a bilingual tutor.
Let's learn together!
Lass uns zusammen lernen!
I have been a practicing scientist for over 6 years, but what I love the most is sharing what I do with others. There's nothing as rewarding as seeing my students experience those "a-ha" moments as they finally understand a concept.
To me, science is about curiosity and creativity. Curiosity about the world around you, and creativity in answering the questions your curiosity brings you. My curiosity is what drew me to a career in the sciences. I couldn't get enough, and I still can't. I strive to share that experience with all of my students.
I started by teaching my peers and leading study groups throughout college. From there I took a job as a counselor at a science focused summer camp becuase I realized how much I enjoyed teaching. I got a lot of positive feedback and my passion for teaching and coaching just keeps growing.
I have a bachelor's degree in Biology and in Psychology and have taken loads of physics and chemistry classes on the way to those degrees.
I have taught at a science summer camp.
I volunteer to chat about neuroscience at schools throughout my community
I regularly help peers and friends who are struggling with certain concepts in their classes.
In college I led study groups for my peers and helped to explain the concepts that were most confusing.

At first, I try to get a sense of where my student is at and what they need from me. I generally begin by asking questions such as:
What class is it for?
What goals do you have for this class?
Are there any topics or parts of the class in particular that you find challenging?
I tailor the emphasis of my tutoring to what each student needs. We all learn in different ways – visually, by personal experience, by repetition, and others – so I try to provide as many different media as possible to my students until we find something that works. Using videos and illustrations is a great way to support what can often be very text-heavy subjects. I also like to incorporate real-world examples because I believe that context and understanding the relevance of a topic make it easier to absorb.
I have worked with students of various ages, all the way from elementary school to college age.
Look for someone who loves what they teach. Passion is key. An unenthusiastic teacher will usually put less effort into ensuring you reach the level of understanding you need. A passionate person will have more patience and be willing to take more time to get you there.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do you think your strengths and weaknesses are in this class?
What do you want to get out of this class?
In what environment do you learn the best?
Is there something in particular that is challenging for you?
What do you enjoy about this class?
