Typically, I like to have an interview first before taking on a new student to make sure that there's a good rapport.
If it's a child, I teach the Suzkuki Method for violin or traditional standard beginning piano instruction. For painting or drawing, I use classic drawing and painting instruction to work on form and technique.
I have a review with the parent after several lessons to make sure that my teaching stye is working and make adjustments, if necessary, based on the parent's feedback.

Perfect! I am an adult learner who had zero experience with piano when I started lessons with Janice. Piano was something that I always had an interest in, but had never pursued. I'm glad I finally did!
With Janice's instruction I see tangible improvement week over week. Every individual learns at a different pace, and Janice recognizes this and adjusts the material to an appropriate level so it is both challenging and motivating. She is encouraging and at the same time pushes you to do your best. Her tips for practice methods have been invaluable. I come away from each lesson having learned something that has fundamentally deepened my insight of the music and the practice.
Also, as an adult learner, life responsibilities can sometimes get in the way of of personal interests. Janice is flexible and accomodating with scheduling, which helps to keep me on track when the unexpected occurs.
Personally, I often have difficulty sticking with new pursuits. Now that I'm close to a year into learning piano I'm confident it will be a lifelong practice. If you have had an interest in learning piano but have not taken that first step, I'd encourage you to reach out to Janice. No matter your age, the best time to start is always today.Perfect! Being new to the Charlottesville area, we were really hopeful to find a piano teacher for my son who had no previous experience. After working with Janice for 6 weeks, we have seen tremendous improvement and increased enthusiasm for learning piano. Janice is a classical teacher who teaches fundamentals in a way that is both encouraging and fun. We are pleased with our sons’ progress.
Additionally, we enrolled our son in her drawing class, which has given our son a greater awareness of the skills needed to be a talented artist. Janet is a knowledgeable teacher with the skills to move her students towards greater fine arts performance.Perfect! I have now taken four lessons with Janice and my progress is noticeable already. I'm 22 years old and am at square one on the piano, but Janice has made my introduction to the instrument completely comfortable. I look forward to continue working with her through the end of summer and into the fall semester. Thank you, Janice!

Love LOVE my lessons with Janice. As an adult learner she adapts to my learning style and is accommodating of my full time work schedule.
Our daughters began piano and violin lessons with Ms. Mauroschadt in January of 2020 and our expectations were simply that they would learn how to play their respective instruments and develop a love for the arts.
In three months, Ms. Mauroschadt has wildly exceeded those expectations! I was immediately impressed with Ms. Mauroschadt's skillful use of the Suzuki Method and her ability to provide our girls with some insight in regard to the inner grounding necessary to enjoy the overall learning process. Both girls have been progressing rapidly, but much more importantly, and unexpectedly, they have learned valuable lessons in character development and life skills—particularly courage to face failure, and resolve to proceed time and again, until they experienced success. They have also learned patience, commitment, discipline and humility while embracing the work involved in making practice successful and have surprisingly encountered the joy that follows after success is attained. As a proud parent, I am hopeful that they will develop their musical abilities as far as they are able. But I am more grateful that the moral skills they have learned will better prepare them to face life’s future challenges. We’ve known Janice for over 10 years now. She first taught our eldest child violin and was excellent at engaging the child’s interest with the violin. She could strike the perfect balance between making the child feel comfortable and motivated to learn the instrument while emphasising the correct technique and expanding their repertoire. Her vast experience can be recognised by her astute observations once the child starts playing and the many ways she comes up with to address issues that might affect the child’s violin playing abilities. Currently, our younger two children have started online Violin lessons with Janice even though we have long moved out of Charlottesville. We just cannot find another violin teacher who is as dedicated and skilled as Janice!
My daughter began Suzuki violin at age 5 and has been working with Janice for over 10 years. Janice uses the Suzuki Method to help break down the impossible, making it accessible for any student.
As for results...I have never heard one of Janice’s students play the classic squeaky violin. In fact, you can spot Janice’s students in a large group of players, because their form is so beautiful. The group classes and twice-yearly recitals provide motivation, showcase the fruits of the student's labor, and provide an enjoyable venue to gather as a studio community. Solo recitals have brought my daughter’s playing to the next level, requiring her to memorize and polish each piece. I don’t know of any other teachers that offer this incredible experience to their students. The focus and dedication required to play violin has helped my daughter to develop discipline and an ability to persevere and has cultivated a love and deep understanding of music.Although we're just with Ms. Janice's studio for 3 months, we learned a lot and made very good progress. She is professional and we definitely recommend her if you wanna learn the piano or violin!
Our granddaughter has reaped so many benefits in her first year of violin instruction! The discipline of daily practice that Ms. Mauroschadt promotes in creative ways has helped Amelia discover the rewards of concentrating on a given task until she reaches her goal. From a reluctant reader with below-par grades, Amelia, after her first six months of violin instruction, blossomed into an avid reader who was earning top marks in her schoolwork! It has also forged a special bond between us, as we’ve used Ms. Mauroschadt’s sage advice for making practice both fun and productive. I highly recommend Ms. Mauroschadt to anyone looking for expert and thoughtful instruction tailored to the individual student.
My son studies classical
drawing with Ms. Mauroschadt. From the preschool age our son
has had an interest in art and has
noticed beauty in many forms, including nature, paintings -- even clothing patterns. He expressed a desire to improve his drawing, and through one of Ms. Mauroschadt's other drawing students, we were fortunate to find her.
Working with Ms. Mauroschadt
has been rigorous and based in the classic techniques in drawing. She provides a solid foundation for him to have the tools to bring accuracy and realism into his drawing. Her guidance stresses discipline, patience and dedication to learn fine drawing skills. He holds a greater appreciation for the work involved in honing a skill and then using that skill to create his vision.
If you are seeking an accomplished fine artist-educator to build discipline and provide a solid technical foundation for your child in drawing, Ms. Mauroschadt provides that in spades!
We feel very lucky to have found Ms. Janice as the piano teacher and drawing teacher for our 9 year old daughter. It is not only because Ms. Janice is a highly experienced teacher, but also because she instills a good work ethic in music or art skill training, which could be of life-long benefit for our daughter.
Every time we leave her class, I feel my daughter has learned so much. Ms. Janice exemplifies what a fine art artist is like. She is strict, fun and loving. My daughter loves Ms. Janice and she is motivated to work hard.View more recommendations
