About Cindy

Hello, my name is Cindy Nelson. I have been teaching piano to students age 4-adult for 20 years. Currently, I teach in student homes, in my White Bear Lake home, with Music Connection in Forest Lake, and with Schmitt Music in Brooklyn Center.

Most recently, I have studied 5 years with a Master Teacher in St. Paul. I also hold an Associate's degree with an emphasis in music (piano) and psychology.

Although students consistently earn Superiors in judged events, I enjoy teaching all abilities.

I enjoy helping students reach their goals and gain confidence through performing.

I love being a part of student's lives. Through the weekly lesson, a bond grows over time allowing me to encourage and support students.

I like using games to introduce and review concepts with elementary age students. Students learn better and are more engaged with the games. If a parent is in the room, the love playing with Mom or Dad!

I also enjoying seeing the confidence students gain with the judged events offered Through my memberships in MMTA, NFMC and NGPT.

I began teaching at the advice of my private instructor in college.

I most recently studied 5 years with Master Teacher. Marianne Bryan of St. Paul. At least half of our time together was discussing piano pedagogy. I also have an Associates degree with an emphasis in Music (piano) and psychology.

I have been an avid reader of piano teaching texts, materials, and on line piano teacher chat sites during my career. I also have attended many workshops and master classes.

I often start with a music game to put elementary aged students at ease after asking them a few questions about themselves. With older students, I ask about their interests and their goals for lessons.

With transfer students, I'll ask if they have something to play for me. Then we do a bit of sightreading, note flashcards, and a music game with elementary age students that covers a wide range of concepts. This will help me assess the students knowledge and where to begin.

I have worked with students of all abilities, age 4 and up. Many of my students have entered judged events, and most earned superior ratings. Most of these events are non-competitive and students of all abilities enter them. The more competitive events are for those that are ready and interested.
