About Ivy

Hello there! My name is Ivy Zhou and I would be so excited to help you or your child reach their goals in vocal music-making, whether that's starting from the basics (absolutely no experience necessary, just courage and enthusiasm!) or if you're preparing for an audition. I focus on vocal technique, musicality, and joyful, expressive storytelling.

A little about me: I am a classically trained operatic soprano with a dual love for performance and working with children. I got my Masters in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College in 2016, and moved to Portland immediately afterwards to sing with Portland Opera's prestigious opera outreach and education program, which serves schoolchildren and communities all around the Pacific Northwest. I've sung and taught students in giant auditoriums, given masterclasses to college students, and also in one-room schoolhouses where the traffic jams are caused by cows! I moved to Seattle in 2018 to sing for Seattle Opera, where my first role was as Cinderella in SO's outreach and education program. I love the storytelling element of vocal performance, and how it teaches us to empathize with others by walking (literally) in their shoes. In today's climate, this kind of expression and compassion is more necessary than ever. I have been lucky enough to sing with Seattle Opera, Portland Opera, Tacoma Opera, Seattle Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Opera Theater Oregon, and other regional companies. In addition to teaching private voice lessons and performing, I currently work as a voice and music teacher for SYMAC, a children's arts organization in Bellevue which offers musical theatre-focused choir programs for middle grades and up, and music performance/theory fundamentals for beginners. In our introductory lesson, I always assess a new student's musical ability (vocal range, singing or performance experience, etc.) and make sure to get to know their goals and interests in studying voice. Especially with older students, I want the lessons to be student-led insofar as the direction of the music (opera or classical art song vs. musical theatre, foreign language vs. English, etc.)--that way music-making stays joyful, while the student is being challenged to grow in the direction in which THEY are interested! I then suggest some pieces for them to learn, and the student and I then work together to narrow down a few pieces they will concentrate on for the following weeks, and I tailor each week's vocal exercises to their specific needs. 



I have taught music in many capacities, from very young students learning music fundamentals (the youngest were age 4), to adult choir singers looking to improve their vocal technique. Most of my students right now are around middle school aged. The best time to start classical training is after the voice has changed, around age 16, but children of any age can start working on the fundamentals!



The two main pieces of advice are:

1) Find someone whose technique you trust--NOT just a shiny resume! There are many brilliant performers who do not know how to teach, and many brilliant teachers who never had performance careers. If a teacher is asking you to do things that hurt or tire out your voice, tell them, and if they cannot adjust, find a new teacher.

2) Find someone who you feel safe with emotionally. Singing is a vulnerable act, and your teacher should be your #1 fan. They should be honest with you about your strengths and weaknesses, but they should never tear you down unnecessarily or make you feel afraid of making a mistake. A teacher should nurture the whole artist, which is to say, the whole person.
