About Emilie
Pilates, at its best, is cross-training for your life. It helps you do the things you love with greater strength, more agility, and more mindfulness, while avoiding injury. My primary role as an instructor is to help clients further develop their own, intrinsic sense of healthy movement, so that they can bring their deep, internal strength to the surface.
I danced as a teenager, and found Pilates while looking for strength-building exercises to help with frequent stress injuries. I was a Pilates student for eight years before pursuing certification. The opportunity to learn anatomy and physiology at an academic level, and apply it to teaching, convinced me.
I trained as a comprehensive instructor through Physicalmind in 2006, and taught Pilates for five years in New York City. I recently began training as a comprehensive instructor through Balanced Body, and am working on my Pilates Method Alliance re-certification.

I will generally meet with a new client prior to our first full session to discuss their goals, physical activities and limitations, and expectations from training. This initial consultation meeting is free.
I have worked with a diverse group of students, including pre-professional dancers, professional athletes, weekend warriors, and non-athletes managing physical challenges including osteoporosis and post-surgery recovery. While these experiences has given me a broad working knowledge of similar needs, I work with each client individually and am attentive to their unique potential.
As counterintuitive as it may seem, look beyond specialization and certification alone. Some of the best Pilates teachers I've ever worked with had neither. And even an excellent Pilates teacher will not be the right Pilates teacher for everyone.
Pilates is not a licensed profession, and the expertise and attentiveness a teacher brings to their work largely depends on their personal commitment. The best recommendation a Pilates teacher has is functional, enduring strength in their students. It is also important to be aware that Pilates is not physical therapy. While there are many excellent instructors who are licensed PT's as well as Pilates teachers, Pilates on its own is not a substitute for localized therapy after an injury or surgery, and may potentially be dangerous if attempted without medical clearance for exercise.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The most important question to ask is what you want to get out of training. Your current goals, and your personal and athletic history will all shape how you approach and respond to Pilates sessions. Knowing what kinds of movement feel natural/awkward and safe/unsafe to you will help your instructor teach you more effectively from the beginning.
When looking for instructors, ask questions about their experience working with clients who share your goals and challenges, and how they manage client goals over time. A good instructor will regularly communicate your progress to you, and will be able to outline plans for your upcoming sessions. Many Pilates instructors also have additional training/certifications in physical therapy, dance, psychology, or exercise science. If expertise in these fields would be beneficial to you, make sure to ask your instructor about their other qualifications.
