About Angela

Hi there, I'm Angela! I'm an effervescent tutor who received both a BA in English and a BFA in Theatre from the University at Buffalo, and a Masters of Fine Arts from University of Missouri - Kansas City.

I have been a tutor for the past nine years with extensive experience in every subject at both the elementary and middle school levels. However, because of my background, language arts is my area of expertise. I have taught pre-K students about phonics, Kindergartners how to read, first graders how to spell, & second graders about proper grammar. I have frequently been a writing coach for both school assignments and test prep, and across every grade level through high school (for creative and nonfiction works alike). I have hosted book clubs online and taught preteens how to digest and debate literature. I love this work, and I have helped my students love it, too.

I also have extensive experience in:

-helping students at all grade levels with reading comprehension

-strengthening students' knowledge of vocabulary

-proper punctuation

-proper essay formatting

-writing an effective entrance essay for school

-& I've taught Oral Interpretation of Literature at the undergraduate level (which had a large public speaking component)

I have seen all of my students grow leaps and bounds with their language arts skill sets, and I cannot wait to help your student do the same.

As a student, I always gravitated towards educators who exuded joy. Their passion for the material and their passion for the work made me a more receptive student, & the more open I was, the more confidently I performed and the more self-confident I became. My objective as a tutor is to provide this same atmosphere for my students.

Truly, nothing makes me happier than seeing a student bursting with newfound confidence both in their schoolwork, & in life.

About the lesson

I don't have a "typical process", per se, as each student is so different & has different needs. However, I will say that I make a concerted effort to get to know each of my students. My aim is to cultivate a relationship with them where they both feel comfortable with me, and increasingly confident in their abilities.

I have worked with numerous different students in numerous different subjects, and all of whom have had different strengths intelligence-wise.

My students (thus far) have ranged between Pre-K & 10th grade.

First and foremost, I'd say that it's WONDERFUL that they're looking for help like this. Asking for help is one of the bravest and frankly, smartest things that anyone can ever do.

Secondly, I'd suggest that the student takes a moment to identify why they'd like this help. Is it because they'd like to have a better understanding of the subject matter? Is it because they'd like a confidence boost? Is it because they're aiming for a certain grade? Be honest about what it is that they're looking for, and then relay that information to their tutor.

I know that I personally will do everything to help my students succeed in whichever way that they'd like to do so!

I recently ran the LA Marathon! It was my first marathon and was an enormous bucket list-y challenge for myself. You could argue that it wasn't "perfect", but I wasn't aiming for perfection. I was simply aiming to make myself proud and cross the Finish Line, and that I did. And I had a great time doing it.

I cannot wait to do it again!
