About Rebeca

Hi! I am a high school English teacher. Though I have taught 9th grade for 8 years, I am certified in grades 7-12 and have worked with students at all levels including adults pursuing high school equivalency certificates. I can also work with college students!

What writing tutoring will look like:

I can help you learn how to organize your writing, develop your ideas, and polish for grammar and mechanics. The tutoring can support you with specifc writing assignments for school, OR it can be a general tutoring session where I bring material to help you practice/improve your skills.

Reading intruction:

If you would like to improve in the areas of critical reading and inferencing, I can certainly support this as well. Reading tutoring can also be held as a general session OR tailored to a specifc school assignment.

I am the lead teacher for our 9th grade English team here at my high school campus. I often work with other teachers to help them better support their students.

What I love most about my job are the relationships that I get to build with both students and colleagues! I look forward to helping you build your skills in all things ELA.

Teaching was an aspiration of mine since my early childhood days. My desire was only strenghtened as I grew up and expereinced learning from some of my own fantastic teachers.

Teaching English is important to me because I am able to help students understand the power of words, and more importanly-- the power that THEY can assume upon achieving command of the language.

I am also just as fired up about reading and critical thinking as these skills are so vital in allowing us to connect with others and become more present and productive citizens of our society!

I am a UTSA graduate. Bachelor's in English. Minor in Spanish. TX teacher certified in English, grades 7-12.

I recieve professional development continuously at my campus & also work to provide training and support to other campus English teachers.

I regularly work with students of ALL levels!

--Struggling students who have major gaps in their reading/writing skills.

--On-level students who are demonstrating skillwork that is right on grade-level.

--Advanced readers/writers who are in need of a teacher to push them past their current performace level, toward their fullest potential.

**I have also worked with students receving special education services as well as English language learners.

*****The goal with any student, regardless of skill level is progress. I will meet you where you are and provide you with strategies and opportunies for support/practice/ refinement according to what we agree that you need.

Ensure that the tutor you are hiring has a background in not just the subject area they are helping you with (such as English, reading, or writing), but that they ALSO have formal training or expereince in TEACHING.

One thing is being a master of the subject... breaking it down and communicating the support in a way that a student will understand and learn from is an entirely different thing :)

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. As a student pursuing individual tutoring, what is my goal?  Do I have several goals?  Write them down and be ready to discuss these with your tutor.  If you are not sure what your goals should be, it would be a good idea to discuss this with your parents or teacher!

2. If looking for support on a particular assignment, will remedial intruction be needed in order to strengthen the skills enough to complete the assignment?  This may require more than a single tutoring session.

3. Do I need someone to help me with an essay or piece of writing?  If you need help starting your assignment from scratch, you might want to consider TWO sessions.  The first: to help you plan and organize your ideas & perhaps even to draft.  The second session: for support revising and editing mechanics.

4. Will my tutor need to spend time preparing for my session ahead of time?  If "ongoing," general tutoring is being sought (i.e. tutoring not just for help on a specific assignment), the tutor will likely need to create and provide lessons/material specifically tailored to the student. In these cases, the tutor will likely build these services into the overall price of the sessions.
