About Laila
Hi, I'm Laila. I am a passionate, empathetic individual determined to help everyone feel accomplished. I help my students understand concepts from basic to abstract through organization, collaboration, and individualization of lesson plans for everyone's personal needs. No rote memorization here!
I have been working as a Spanish, math, science, writing, and psychology tutor since 2018. I just recently graduated summa cum laude from the College of William & Mary with a BS in Psychological Sciences, with a minor in Spanish. As a new resident of the DC area, I'm excited for all of the learning potential around me. Currently, I work full time at the NIH in the Mental Health division as a research and clinical assistant studying schizophrenia. In my free time, I love exploring used bookstores, running on nature trails, writing personal essays and short stories, and spending time with those I love.

I started when I noticed a need for diversity of teaching style. Not everyone thrives in typical classroom settings, and I noticed the negative effects this was having on many of my peers' mental health. From there, I began helping struggling students one-on-one to help cater the teaching style to their own ideal learning environments.
I have graduated from both high school and college with honors and 8 semesters of making Dean's List. I have studied a wide array of topics such as biology, math, psychology, writing, and Spanish. Furthermore, I have tutored for a number of families in my hometown and have help many students acheive their goals.

I meet people where they are. Everyone works differently, so I love talking with students about how they learn best, ways in which they would like to grow, and their academic goals. Then, I will make a lesson plan beforehand in order to accomplish all that we are hoping to in a session to grow toward their long-term goal. Everyone has limitless possibility, and I believe it takes empathy and creativity to help an individual reach their full potential.
I have worked with middle schoolers, high schoolers, and college students. I have aslo worked with individuals with different developmental and/or learning abilities.
I would suggest that they take some time to look introspectively and ask themselves, what are they hoping to gain from this experience? Whether it's an improved grade, a deeper understanding of a topic, a better grasp on their ideal learning style, or all of the above; no area is more important than any other. Then, they can proceed with a level head and clear vision.
I have recently moved from Chicago to Washington DC. It's been quite the transition! I have encountered so many random acts of kindness around the city, which has helped me feel right at home.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think students should be very upfront about their goals working with a teacher. Additionally, I think they should inquire about a teacher's teaching style, values, and competence in the subject matter. Meeting times, frequency, and location should also be discussed to make sure both parties are on the same page logistically.
