Teacher got to know each kids their own problem and target their weaknesses. Children more focus during the tutoring and don’t get distracted.

One trait that Jessica possessed that I did not was experience. I was at a loss on where to even begin applying for college. At the very start, Jessica helped me pick out a few colleges that I knew for certain that I wanted to apply to, because even with that, I had no idea where to start. Her patient attitude and specific questions allowed me to think about what I truly wanted to experience in college when before, I was completely clueless. On the College Board website, she pointed out key details about colleges, such as graduation rate and ethnicity distribution, that would influence me in my decision to apply for that certain college, as the social part of college was just as important as the academic part.

Even with colleges listed and ready to apply to, she outlined a schedule for me to follow with essay prompts and when I should have them written so she could edit them. It was extremely helpful as it kept me organized and on task over the summer before my senior year of high school. Without Jessica’s notifications that I would receive from her before I had to finish writing an essay, I would not have gotten the necessary support that I needed in order to apply to college to the best of my ability. On my essays, she gave detailed and constructive comments that would only be for my benefit, as it would help in making my chances into being accepted just a little more. I edited all of my essays at least three or four times based on the critiques that Jessica gave that would make them just a bit better, more precise and neat. Even on the University of California personal statement prompts, we edited them up to seven times in order to make sure that they were well-written and promising enough to get me accepted into the college that I desired.

Jessica even accompanied me to my visit to University of California, Irvine, when I scheduled a tour due to her suggestion. She aided me by asking the guides questions that I was not able to ask, and was an encouraging presence next to me as we walked around the campus for the afternoon. It was nice that, even though she did not attend that college, she was able to provide me with the assistance needed should I decide to go there, which I ended up doing this fall of 2016.

I would not have been accepted to any of the colleges that I applied to were it not for Jessica’s advice and constant support guiding me every step of the way on the path to applying for college, and I will not forget how thankful I am towards her for it."

Ms. Lin always does her best to communicate with me, whether it’s for scheduling purposes or my children’s progress. If she is ever running late, she texts to let me know, which is helpful for me in maintaining my schedule. As well, she stays afterwards to make up for the time if she was even a few minutes late.

I appreciate how gentle, but firm she is with the kids. After telling her I needed a tutor for the kids, not a friend, she worked to make this happen. She created consistency by having the kids refer to her as “Ms. Lin” rather than by her first name. This also helped create structure and make it clear to my students that they were there to learn, not play. It’s clear she cares about the students, but she doesn’t allow it to distract her from her purpose of teaching and tutoring.

When it comes to tutoring, she employs a variety of different methods tailored to the kids. She constantly checks in with my kid to make sure they understand the process, and not just guess the result. She understands that every kid’s mind works differently, and that tutoring should be adjusted accordingly. After all, the point of private tutoring is someone who can work specifically with each individual. As a tutor, Ms. Lin is flexible and ready to adapt to my kids’ unique abilities and limitations.

Her diverse areas of tutoring allowed my family and I to have her instruct not only my own daughter, but also two of my nieces visiting from out-of-state. She was able to teach English, writing, PSAT test prep, and math with ease. She was honest about being stronger in English over math, and even went out of her way to check if another math tutor she knew would be interested in tutoring. This showed me she was not just interested in making money, but in honesty and the well-being of the kids. The math tutor she knew was not available, but we went with Ms. Lin for the job and it turned out well.

Ms. Lin even created and updated a google drive document listing my students’ progress. This was provided out of her own thoughtfulness, and allowed me to see how the kids were doing.

Overall, I would recommend Ms. Lin to anyone who wants a thoughtful and intelligent tutor. She will check in with you as often as you like, respond to all texts and emails, and provide a kind and caring atmosphere.
