I believe in a hands-on practical approach to learning any subject, especially reading and writing. Language is best learned and mastered by practice -- reading good writing and then writing your own thoughts and feelings about what you have read. Unless teaching literature per se-- as opposed to teaching effective reading, I would encourage students to read fiction and non-fiction that interests them. As a child, I taught myself to read by studying my older sibling's comic books! Guided editing & rewriting is an especially effective way to practice and learn.
