About John
I am a former Principal Teacher of Mathematics with 25 years' experience in the Scottish Education system.
I understand the challenges that mathematics poses and have developed lessons and strategies to support young people overcome their anxiousness and develop their confidence when working on mathematical topics.
Some pupils are doing reasonably well but want to improve their grades. Others have gaps in their learning, have missed school or have lost confidence in Mathematics. Some simply benefit from having an experienced teacher explain things in a different way.
My starting point is always to understand the individual pupil.
Together, we identify:
• What you already understand well
• Which areas you find difficult
• Any gaps in previous learning
• Your level of confidence in Mathematics
• Your current goals and longer-term ambitions
Lessons are then tailored to your individual needs.
I aim to make Mathematics clearer and more manageable by breaking difficult ideas into understandable steps while also encouraging pupils to think independently and develop confidence in their own abilities.
I am currently working with young people who attend online maths classes through Scotland's online school, e-Sgoil. I have an understanding of the challenges that online learning presents and have developed approaches to supporting pupils through this process.

I believe that Mathematics is best learnt through understanding.
Although practice is important, simply memorising procedures is often not enough. I help pupils understand the ideas behind mathematical methods so that they can apply their knowledge confidently to unfamiliar problems.
My lessons are supportive, interactive and encouraging, but I also have high expectations. I want pupils to become increasingly independent and confident in their own mathematical thinking.
My extensive experience across teaching (Principal Teacher of Mathematics), school leadership (Depute Head Teacher), qualification Development Consultant with Qualification Scotland, Associate Tutor on the University of Glasgow Teacher Training Programme, and a former HMI School Inspector gives me a broad perspective on how young people learn and what helps them make meaningful progress.
I have 25 years' experience teaching all levels of mathematics to Scottish students from the stages of S1 to S6 learners.
I currently have particular availability for daytime online tuition, which can be especially suitable for young people who have flexible educational arrangements. Lesson length is usually 1 hour and I have some evening availability. Currently working as an online teacher with Scotland's online school, e-Sgoil.
