About Louie

I am FIDE Arena International Master Louie Rivera, with nearly four decades of competitive chess experience and more than 26 years of teaching, coaching, and mentoring. My competitive experience includes victories over Grandmasters Joel Benjamin and Ronen Har-Zvi, along with draws against Grandmasters David Smerdon, John Fedorowicz, and Eltaj Safarli in online competition. My teaching combines classical chess fundamentals with practical tournament experience, creative strategic thinking, and close attention to the student’s character and goals. I have helped beginners learn the game, developing competitors prepare for tournaments, and experienced players deepen their understanding of difficult positions. Chess can teach concentration, accountability, patience, emotional control, and how to continue thinking when circumstances become uncomfortable. These qualities are developed naturally through the work we do over the board. I take mentorship seriously. I listen carefully, identify patterns that may be holding a player back, and build a program suited to that student’s actual needs. Progress is not measured only by rating points. It is also measured by stronger decisions, greater confidence, and a healthier relationship with competition. If you are looking for the cheapest possible lesson, I may not be the right instructor. If you are looking for experience, individual attention, honest analysis, and meaningful long-term development, I would be glad to work with you. Online and in-person instruction available for suitable students.

My lessons are designed around the individual—not a one-size-fits-all curriculum. We study strategy, tactics, endgames, opening ideas, tournament preparation, competitive psychology, and the student’s own games. More importantly, we examine how you think: What did your intuition say? What did you miss? What was the position asking you to understand? Every student has a different chess mind. Some need stronger calculation. Others need confidence, patience, focus, resilience, or help recovering after a difficult loss. I adjust the lesson to the person and create challenges that are demanding without destroying the student’s enthusiasm for the game. The goal is not simply to memorize moves. It is to develop independent judgment, strategic imagination, practical decision-making, and the ability to recognize opportunities that other players overlook. I work especially well with serious adult improvers, committed tournament players, and thoughtful students who want a lasting mentor—not merely someone who assigns puzzles.
