About Nathan
'm a first-class Cambridge engineering graduate and qualified teacher, holding a PGCE with QTS and a Distinction in Mathematics with SEND from the University of Leeds.
I've tutored one-to-one for over ten years, from GCSE through to postgraduate level, across mechanical, civil, chemical, and electrical engineering. I specialise in the units students most often get stuck on — design projects, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, structural analysis, finite elements, and systems and control — because these demand synthesis of everything learned beforehand rather than recall of a single topic.
Alongside tutoring, I've worked as an engineer and consultant in industry — building numerical models in MATLAB and Python, and advising engineering and technology startups on innovation finance. I've written the narratives for three successful Innovate UK grants worth nearly £600k, and supported an additional £300k in private equity investment. I teach engineering as it's actually practised, including the commercial context design decisions sit within, which is often the part university courses cover least.
My specialism is SEND. I trained on a specialist SEND route and my placement was in a setting for pupils with severe and complex needs, so I'm experienced at adapting to how each student actually learns. That matters at university level, where students are expected to work independently and rarely ask for help until they're already behind.
Available in person across Leeds and Yorkshire, and online nationwide and internationally.

I focus on genuine understanding rather than memorising methods. Engineering rewards clear thinking — once you understand why a calculation or a design decision works the way it does, unfamiliar problems stop being intimidating and you can defend your reasoning in a report or a viva.
Design projects are where this matters most. They're open-ended, they don't have a single right answer, and students often freeze because there's no formula to follow. I help break the project down, work out what's actually being asked, and build the confidence to make and justify engineering decisions.
My approach is patient and adaptive. I don't have one method I apply to everyone, and I'm happy to explain something several different ways until it lands.

I worked with Nathan while preparing for the CIMA and he made a real difference to how I approached the material. He explained difficult topics clearly, often using practical examples that made the concepts easier to remember, and was patient whenever I needed something covered again from a different angle.
What stood out most was how well he understood the exam itself. He helped me focus on what was most likely to come up, showed me how to structure answers, and gave useful feedback on my practice questions. Sessions were well organised, and he tailored them to the areas where I was weakest rather than following a fixed script.Nathan possesses all the qualities of an excellent teacher. His enthusiasm for mathematics is infectious, and he has a remarkable talent for making complex concepts accessible to learners of all abilities. He communicates with clarity and patience, both in explaining mathematical principles and in providing constructive feedback. Students consistently praise his ability to build their confidence while challenging them to achieve their best.
What sets Nathan apart is his genuine commitment to education. He takes time to understand each student's individual needs and adapts his teaching approach accordingly. His work preparing students for Oxbridge admissions and challenging exams like STEP and TMUA demonstrates his ability to nurture high achievement while fostering a love of learning. He keeps abreast of curriculum developments and continually seeks to improve his teaching practice.
Nathan works exceptionally well as part of our tutoring team, supporting colleagues and contributing to resource development. His professionalism, reliability and collaborative approach make him a valued member of our organisation.am writing to express my deep appreciation and wholehearted recommendation for Nathan who has been an invaluable tutor and mentor to me over the past few years. Throughout my academic journey, which has been challenging due to the complexity of my major, Nathan has consistently gone above and beyond to simplify difficult concepts, making them accessible through clear explanations and practical, real-life examples.
One of Nathan's greatest strengths is his ability to adapt his teaching style to the needs of the student. Whenever I struggled to grasp a particular method or concept, he would patiently explore various different approaches until I fully understood. His dedication to ensuring that I could visualize abstract concepts in a way that made sense to me has been instrumental in my academic success.
Beyond his technical expertise, Nathan has been a constant source of support and encouragement. His passion for teaching and genuine desire to see his students excel has inspired me to push through even the most difficult challenges. I am incredibly grateful for his guidance, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to helping me succeed.
I have no doubt that Nathan would be an asset in any teaching or mentoring capacity. He possesses not only exceptional knowledge but also the rare ability to make complex subjects engaging and comprehensible. I highly recommend him to anyone seeking a dedicated, talented, and compassionate tutor.I’m happy to provide a reference for Nathan.
Courses Nathan has assisted me with include Financial Accounting, Corporate Finance, Financial Markets, Analytics, M&A, Artificial Intelligence, Operating Systems, Computer Vision, and Computational Models. He has an amazing ability to seamlessly navigate between different fields and grasp intricate concepts. His guidance not only made my transition from the tech world to finance enjoyable but also made it seem effortless, easily explaining complex finance concepts. During my time at MIT Sloan's MFin program, I frequently sought Nathan's expertise to dissect financial cases and gain his valuable insights. More recently, Nathan played an important role in bridging the gap between my financial markets coursework and the knowledge I had in machine learning, showing its relevance, applicability, and advantages in the finance field. Not only is Nathan a professional but also a pleasure to work with; very reliable, approachable, humble, and always positive. His mentorship has been an invaluable asset throughout my journey.View more recommendations
