About Michael
I have 30 years' experience as a full-time GCSE Science teacher, private tutor and GCSE Examiner - I know the subject and where candidates often lose marks. I tutor online usually for 1 hour, but I can offer shorter or longer sessions if suitable. Many years of experience help me to explain the content in a way that is easier to understand for those who feel a bit lost - the content can be a bit overwhelming and confusing. Spending time one-to-one at the student's pace makes such a difference to understanding and confidence. More able students benefit from a faster pace, more challenging tasks, focused on harder exam questions etc. Everyone is different and so the tuition sessions will adapt and change to suit the individual, complement what is done in school, identifying and strengthening weaknesses etc. I have experience of all the main exam boards and use the latest textbooks for that specific exam board, not just a general science book. This does make a significant difference as they do vary on content and style. My experience as a GCSE Examiner made me so aware of how many candidates who seemed to know a lot of science failed to get good marks due to poor exam technique. Even now this is often not emphasised and practised enough, due to lack of time in school. In tuition sessions we can work on this much more, talking over why marks are lost, what to look for in the questions etc - this takes time and practice. University: - Newcastle University - BSc [2]

From September I have the following availability Mondays 5.15-6.15pm or Tuesdays 5.15-6.15pm. I focus on GCSE Sciences - biology, chemistry and physics and only do online. Everyone is different, learns differently and needs help in different areas and different ways. I use the many years of experience as a teacher, tutor and former examiner to provide lessons that suit the needs of each individual student. As well as covering the subject content I also work on exam and revision skills - important for improving grades and helpful for other subjects, useful skills now and in the future. I have helped students gain top grades, many of them initially not keen on science as a subject, preferring other subjects - that's fine, as long as you are prepared to put in a fair effort. I specialise in GCSE Sciences - biology, chemistry and physics and only do online.

Perfect! Fantastic tutor. My daught aboslutely loved the lesson she had . Michael made her think and problem solve .
Perfect! Fantastic and super engaging teacher. I’d highly recommend!
Perfect! Michael was fantastic- very patient, thorough and motivational. Our son really responded to his style and learnt such a lot in his lesson.
- Jamie struggles to recall the facts and names. This is mainly due to the topic being taught a long time ago, he hasn’t revised it. He uses a mix of revision techniques, involving CGP, past papers, save my exams and online videos NB. Make sure any resource is specific to Edexcel GCSE or you may be learning things you don’t need, or missing out on things you are expected to know.Michael's response :
He clearly is keen, wants to learn and engages well.
Perfect! Michael is an absolutely fantastic tutor, the best of the best. He systematically and patiently rehabilitated our son's scientific knowledge over the course of about 16 months and took him from a failing or borderline student to comfortable 5s and 6s in triple science. In fact our son started to enjoy science and talk about it in a way he had never done before. To our great astonishment he even started making nerdy science jokes and developing a meta-understanding of how all the sciences linked up. We were particularly impressed with Michael's deep understanding of the teenage mind, his meticulous feedback to us as parents, and his sense of humour. He is a very gifted tutor and we owe a great deal to him. (Modest) quote from my son about the outcome, "This is the greatest comeback of all time, from a U to a 6 in Physics!" This was pretty much down to Michael's encouraging and inspiring teaching. Thank you Michael.
Perfect! First lesson with Michael, and my son already feel more confident that he will understand science!
Perfect! My son says Michael is a good teacher. That’s amazing as he can be very picky.

Joseph said they have only done a few lessons on this topic but he seemed to be ok with all the different aspects when I checked so we went to the end of chapter 19 questions.
These were not easy questions and involved some other calculations (such as moles) and a new idea (of why results may be higher or lower than expected).
A useful exercise and he did very well.
If he has time I recommend he does Q7 and 8 on page 226.
Perfect! Micheal, revisited some chemistry concepts and misconceptions with my daughter who is studying GSCE chemistry. She really enjoyed the lesson and was completely engaged in the session

Basic Chemistry knowledge was ok, as we progressed Martha was able to do more. There was a lack of confidence, but hopefully that will disappear as she gets better and understands more.
Perfect! Best Tutor
Mr Mepsted is an excellent tutor and has helped my son achieve a 9 in his GCSEs for biology. My son has nothing but good things to say about his teaching and has found that he learnt best from the way that Mr Mepsted taught; Mr Mepsted is the best tutor he has ever had, according to my son. Mr Mepsted is very kind, approachable, promptly responds to queries and is organised, always sending detailed summaries of every lesson to us so that we can track our son's progress. I would 100% ( 120%, if possible) recommend Mr Mepsted as he is an amazing tutor.
Subject : Biology
Outcome : 9 grade in GCSE- Thank you for your kind review. I am sure Caleb will do very well in the future, he is bright and able and has many fine personal qualities that came through during our tuition sessions. I am sure you are rightly proud of him.Michael's response :
Perfect! Outstanding teacher. Exceptionally genuine, dependable and effective, And a lovely person too!
Michael is the kind of teacher I would wish for all children. Everyone should have had at least one teacher in their life who mattered to them. A teacher they could trust and on whom they could depend. Michael has become that person for our son.
His dedication, enthusiasm for science, organisation, knowledge of the new requirements, dry sense of humour, flexibility and willingness to help with questions and marking papers impressed us all.
But Michael has another quality beyond his professionalism, knowledge and ability to explain difficult ideas that is harder to define. He is a really good teacher from a bygone era - one I remember from my school days - when teachers cared for the welfare of their students and were unfailingly reliable - striving to support them. Michael is a teacher who students can trust to not let them down.
Michael has taken our son through three Edexcel science IGCSEs as a private candidate - two while our son was still attending a London day school; Biology in January 2021, Chemistry in summer 2021 and the latest, Physics, as a full-time homeschooler.
With Michael's teaching and support, our son achieved grade 9s in both Biology and Chemistry igcse after just a few months intense study at weekends and evenings between school homework. We are hoping for the same result for Physics.
Michael constantly found materials that stretched our son and worked at just the speed he needed. He spent time answering questions whenever we had them and when it came to the first real exam - the first igcse as a private candidate was a scary prospect - Michael did the work of an army over the Christmas period 2020, marking and returning papers, getting back to us whenever our son had questions and offering extra tutorials. Michael is utterly reliable and we came to depend on him.
Now that we have had other tutors for different subjects, we see that Michael's generosity of support and care was exceptional. It was also clear how much this modest, rather shy person was genuinely troubled by a changing educational system that overloaded and stressed students and made demands that were at odds with learning. And it was easy to tell that Michael had been both a school teacher and an examiner - that he would have been the person in the examiners' group politely but determinedly thrashing out the mark scheme to be sure that fairness and real science decided the grades.
On a personal level, everyone looked forward to Michael's tutorials. They were fun. They were challenging. Michael's dry humour and gentle teasing over some absurdity that our son wrote on a past paper regularly had us in fits of laughter. Michael was gently strict in an old school sense - he didn't let nonsense go unnoticed - but he was always patient and fair. He communicated difficult ideas clearly and methodically. No need for whiteboards or IT - Michael used paper and pencil and real books and words.
Michael has been a wonderful influence on our son. He helped our move to homeschooling be a pleasure not a strain. We have come to regard him as a family friend. We unequivocally recommend him as a tutor.
Thank you, Michael, for everything you have done for Tristan.
Subject : Physics
Outcome : Grade 9 Edexcel igcse Biology (exam sat - 93%), Grade 9 Edexcel igcse Chemistry (centre assessed grade). Edexcel igcse Physics January exams still ongoing.- Thank you for your generous review. It has been a pleasure to tutor Tris and I am sure he will go on and have a great future, he has the right, positive attitude to learning. Success is much more likely when student, parent and teacher are all able to work as a team, supporting each other, which is certainly what happened here. I look forward to hearing how his bright future unfolds.Michael's response :
Perfect! The best? Indubitably
Michael is an inspirational and motivational tutor who really cares about outcomes for the students he works with.
My lazy, undemonstrative, procrastinating son, who left everything to the last few weeks, managed a decent grade with Michael's help and extreme patience.
My son is now more confident and ready to face the tasks ahead of him. Michael has played a part in that.
Thank you.
Unequivocally recommended

Michael knows his stuff. He is an excellent tutor who gets the best out of our bright but difficult and surly Y11 son. Michael is well prepared and provides appropriate pitch and challenge and delivers with patience and clarity. Our son has not always applied himself to his schoolwork but Michael has been able to motivate him very effectively. Michael is flexible in our requests as we flit from biology to chemistry to physics and back again. Top notch A++++
Subject : Biology
Outcome : On-going but fingers crossed a grade 8 in the GCSE 'assessments' this yearPerfect! Excellent, thorough, precise, friendly, professional
Michael is great. For us he has focused on understanding how exam questions need to be specifically answered. He goes through exam papers precisely. He explains beyond the syllabus but knows all the board requirements really well. He is always on time for lessons and writes a report after each session with a summary and recommendations. Most of all, for us, he has been really flexible when requirements change. And he is a lovely person and seems to both like and care about students. Our son really likes him and so do I!

My son has had a number of tutors, but Michael was the only one who kept him happy, engaged, and learning all at the same time. Undoubtedly, his tuition added at least two grades to Henry's GCSE result. We will be returning for A levels!
An absolutely exceptional tutor!
Michael has been an amazing tutor for my son. We started tutoring with him two years before the GCSEs, and starting early like this was definitely the key to success.
When they first began, my son did not understand science at all and really struggled. Thanks to Michael's support over the last two years, he went into his exams feeling fully prepared and didn't stress at all. He now actually enjoys the subject!
I have never met a tutor like Michael before. After every single lesson, he wrote a detailed report that was incredibly helpful for revision. Michael is not only an excellent teacher, but he also truly cares about his students.
Anyone who can secure Michael as a tutor will be very lucky. I highly recommend him to any parent looking for a brilliant, supportive, and dedicated tutor. Starting early with him made all the difference for us. Thank you so much for everything!Michael started working with our son after his mock exams and made a real difference in a relatively short time. His support in Biology significantly improved our son’s confidence, particularly going into his final exams.
What sets Michael apart is that he genuinely cares about his students and is committed to helping them succeed. His teaching was engaging, supportive and effective, and our son really enjoyed working with him.
We only wish we had found him sooner. Highly recommended.Michael is an excellent GCSE Science tutor. He is kind, patient, and organised, always making sure students truly understand the subject. He is also flexible with scheduling, especially around exams, and builds confidence through clear explanations and plenty of practice. Our child has made great progress, achieved the grades he wanted, and secured his choice of subject and sixth form as a result. We highly recommend Michael.
Michael is a brilliant, kind and patient tutor - perfect for our son who got support from Michael for all his GCSE science subjects. Michael does not just skim the surface of subjects or focus on just test practice, instead and in addition, he gave our son a good understanding of the topics too.
With Michael's support and guidance through the GCSE preparation period, our son secured all A's in his sciences and is able to study his first choice higher subjects. Thank you Michael and we wish you all the best.Michael is a first class tutor. The best we have had in any subject. He made the lessons enjoyable for our son and our son always found each lesson valuable. He shares knowledge on the subject well and in an understandable way and gives great advice on handling exam questions and how to prepare for an exam. He is also great at keeping us as parents updated on how the lessons are going. Would thoroughly recommend Michael
A dedicated, knowledgeable, interested and talented teacher, who explains even the toughest topics in a way that makes them understandable and related exam questions do-able. Not only are topics explained well, but lessons are enjoyable. I can’t recommend Michael highly enough!
My son was doing the dual award, achieving grades like Cs and Bs. However, after having Michael to tutor him and advise him on studying and learning techniques, he achieved all A* in science, and is in all the top sets for A level. Michael now is tutoring my other son, and I'm confident he's in safe hands, and will achieve best grades!!!
Michael is a kind, knowledgeable, and a talented teacher who has completely and positively transformed my son's attitude to and ability in science. Michael also worked as an examiner and as such his understanding of exactly what is required to answer exam questions fully and accurately is absolutely vital. My son said that learning about science with Michael was great as he made it so interesting and also relevant . He explained things very clearly and was always encouraging. My son looked forward to his tutorials and it is worth starting early and overcoming any problems, well before exams. Continuing with Michael for revision was extremely useful. I can absolutely and thoroughly recommend him as an exceptional tutor.
I had been out of education for 7 years when I sought out Michael’s services as a tutor. I needed a higher grade for my science GCSE before I could further my career and it had been holding me back for a while now.
Michael was fantastic at reintroducing me into a comfortable learning environment, he was easy to contact and talk to, adapted to my learning style quickly and gave me lots of tips for studying at home.
I couldn't be more pleased with the results and the life lessons I now have to help me study in the future.View more recommendations
