About Joseph
Hi, I’m Joseph Cowlishaw — creator of the Wowflute, a pocket ocarina.
For over a decade, I’ve been building, refining, and handcrafting Wowflutes — more than 60,000 of them — each one shaped, tuned, and tested by hand. What started as a creative spark turned into a product loved by thousands, funded through multiple Kickstarter campaigns, and developed into everything from playful Swirl Wowflutes to heirloom-quality Relic editions in copper, white bronze, and sterling silver.
But what matters most isn’t just that I make them.
It’s that I understand them.
I know the design.
I know the sound.
I know the materials.
I know the mistakes.
I know how to fix them.
I’ve spent years experimenting with form, tone, airflow, metals, finishes, packaging, branding, and customer experience. I’ve sold at markets, online, and through live demonstrations. I’ve tested what works in real hands — not just on paper.
As a lifelong creative (14+ years in product photography and 3+ years in stop motion animation), I also teach with a designer’s eye and a builder’s mindset. I don’t just show you how to do something — I help you understand why it works, so you can create confidently on your own.
If you want to:
• Learn to build or refine your own Wowflute
• Improve tone and craftsmanship
• Understand materials and firing techniques
• Develop a product with real market appeal
• Or simply learn from someone who has lived the full journey from idea to thousands of sales
…I’d love to help.
This isn’t theory.
This is hands-on, real-world experience — shaped through years of creative experimentation, trial and error, and persistence.
If you’re ready to learn from someone who has walked the path, let’s build something great together.

When you take a Wowflute lesson with me, you’re not just learning about music — you’re learning directly from the creator of the instrument.
I’ve handcrafted over 60,000 Wowflutes and developed everything from playful Swirl editions to heirloom-quality Relic models in copper, white bronze, and sterling silver. I know how this instrument breathes, how it resonates, and how to unlock its full sound — because I designed it, built it, and refined it over years of hands-on experience.
In our lesson, you’ll learn:
• How to produce a clear, confident tone
• Breath control and airflow techniques
• How to play melodies beautifully and expressively
• Tips that make the instrument easier and more enjoyable
• The musical mindset that makes learning feel natural
Whether you’re brand new to music or just new to the Wowflute, I teach in a way that’s simple, encouraging, and practical. No intimidation. No fluff. Just real understanding.
I’ve spent years not only building Wowflutes, but playing them at markets, demonstrating them live, and helping thousands of people experience their first “Oh wow!” moment.
If you’re ready to unlock that moment for yourself — I’d love to teach you.
Let’s make music.
