About James
‘How can someone who specialises in Biology make a good English tutor?’ If you find yourself wondering this, then you’re in luck. I am a tutor who is passionate about the intersection of biology and the humanities. I often tutor in a way that stimulates critical thinking. Learning is a lifelong process for me, and I strive to create a friendly and inclusive environment for students.
How is literature relevant to people’s lives, especially if you choose to take a completely different path? How can a person improve their academic English? How does theatre influence writing? How can I make my writing distinguish from all the AI slop? Book a lesson to find out!

My lessons are tailored entirely according to the student’s goals and needs. Is it Shakespeare that you’re looking for? Help with academic English? Or are you daunted by the prospect of a timed ‘creative’ task, as you perspire heavily under the cruel scrutiny of the clock?
I encourage my younger students to see English in the lens of film, music and theatre. I use my creative leadership training from the National Youth Theatre and my experience as a Biology and Latin tutor to make them excel at all aspects of comprehension and composition. I find that my older and even my mature students usually require finessing with their essays and I’m very happy to provide detailed feedback.

AWESOME TUTOR!!!! Had James for a sci-fi creative writing course and it was v v inspiring :)))
James is an outstanding tutor. My son always comes out of his lessons feeling enriched and he has guided my three children and different stages of their life - 13+ at a British independent school and also to sophomore year, when we began to move countries. He manages to always link the curriculum to current affairs. Each of my children have different needs; one is too relaxed, the other is too harsh on themselves. James was able to guide each of them with ease and has taught them several subjects ranging from English to IB Biology. We will miss him greatly!
An incredible tutor. I've gone from hating English to loving it. I always enjoy his lessons. Some of them have been challenging, but it's so rewarding. James has been there to guide me across every stage of my educational journey. I've just finished my first public examinations and never have I felt more confident. Thank you, James!
