About Shawn
Hi, I'm Shawn, a full-stack software developer based in Richmond, BC, with over 20 years of experience building websites, business systems and mobile apps.
Since 2008 I've been the lead software engineer for an equipment rental and construction company, where I built the software the whole business runs on, including an iPhone app that's live on the App Store and used by field crews every day. I also take on freelance projects for clients in e-commerce, real estate and other industries.
I studied at the Art Institute of Vancouver, so I care about design as well as code. I'm patient, I explain things in plain English, and I enjoy seeing students go from stuck to building things on their own.

Lessons are hands-on: we build something real from the first session. I've been a professional software developer for over 20 years and still build and run my own web and mobile apps every day, so I teach the way the work is actually done.
A typical lesson: a short check-in on what you want to build or understand, about 15 minutes on a new concept, then we write code together on your screen, and you leave with a small task to practise.

- Complete beginners learning HTML, CSS and JavaScript from scratch
- Students who need help with programming courses or assignments
- Career changers building a portfolio of real projects
- Developers moving into React, React Native, Node.js or PHP
I adapt the pace and projects to you, explain things in plain English, and focus on understanding why the code works, not just copying it.
