About Katy
I have been playing the violin and piano for over 20 years now, graduating in 2015 from the Royal College of Music with a first-class bachelor's degree, and currently finishing an Advanced Diploma in Performance at the Royal Academy of Music, and hope to start a PhD in September. I have performed extensively all over the UK as a violin soloist, most notably as a strings finalist on BBC Young Musician of the Year and at the Battle Proms concert series to audiences of up to 12,000. I've also delved into the Folk world a little and was on TV for the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards as part of Jim Moray's band! I first started teaching violin at 18 as a private assistant to Professor Berent Korfker, coaching his younger students from the Purcell School and alike. During this time I helped students prepare GCSE and A-level practical exams, auditions for music colleges, and I even travelled abroad to an international competition coaching students in Prof Korfker's absence. Working with such talented children inspired and excited me to develop my own class with a more mixed ability and in both violin and piano. My current class ranges from complete beginners to well into their grades, with a huge age range of 4-50! I have a 100% pass rate in all students' exams taken - whether that be ABRSM grades or music college auditions. I am also an advocate for musicians with disabilities, sharing my experiences living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome as a professional violinist on social media. This has given me the ability to really think outside the box when helping students, helping them overcome issues they've previously been told were unfixable. Last year I joined the global roster of Eva Artistic Management for violin.

My methods of teaching depend on the student's personality and ability, often incorporating games into the lessons with students often wondering how they finished so quickly! I like to create a fun environment for musical development where questions are encouraged, and all students are taught how to teach themselves and apply techniques learnt in the lesson to the practice room. I put a strong emphasis on note-reading from the very beginning as this is key to learning any instrument, and my experience is the earlier it's learnt the faster the student progresses. I am just as happy to help students prepare for grades as I am teaching without them, the main thing is that music should be fun and not a chore!

Katy has been teaching my daughter violin for 6 years.
She has a wonderful approach to teaching: positive and kind with high attention to detail to help the student improve.
The transition to online lessons went well. Lessons with Zoom as usual!
I truly recommend Katy.
BrigitteKaty has shown great understanding and patience with a sensitive child ensuring she feels reassured every step of the way towards achieving her piano Grades. Even now with temporary zoom lessons, Katy manages to keep the momentum up through her enthusiasm and praise. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her.
Katy is a fantastic piano (and violin) teacher. Not only is she an accomplished and professional musician she is a skilled teacher. Her lessons are warm and friendly and is able to teach any standard, providing gentle yet clear instructions on how to improve. My daughter, who has been studying with Katy for a number of years, thoroughly enjoys her lessons and has shown much improvement and growth. I highly recommend Katy.
Katy started teaching my son piano when he was 5 years old - he’s now 8 and loves his piano lessons with her. They laugh their way through lessons and he has made great progress. Due to the pandemic we’ve moved to online lessons - but the transition has been smooth and successful. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to anyone interested in learning piano or violin - she is great!
Katy has been teaching my son violin & piano for almost 5 years now. She is very lovely positive and patient and brings out the best in him - I recommend her highly to teach a child of any age including difficult teenagers!
Katy is a great piano teacher. She has a wonderful manner and is very encouraging and able to get the best out of my 11 year old son. She has taught him both face to face pre covid and online during the covid pandemic. The online lessons have continued to be excellent and I would strongly recommend her to anyone looking for a piano teacher.
