For chess, I generally would first introduce the pieces to my student. I'd slowly guide them into the world of chess. After my student has a fair grasp on the pieces, I would start with mock games, teaching both successes and failures of the game.
I won't be a coach, per se, more like a friendly big brother to learn a new game from.
