About Bethany
Having graduated from the University of Nottingham with a BSc Hons in Biochemistry and Genetics and MSc Biomedical Science from Nottingham Trent University, then went on to qualify as a Medical Doctor BMBS. My undergraduate dissertation was microbiology laboratory-based, investigating the potential of Bdellovibrio bacterivorous in the design of novel antibiotics. This experience I extended to my professional career, with my first graduate job serving as a laboratory technician in Leicester Medical School. From there, I have worked in several academic research groups (cardiac surgery, infectious and enteric disease) as a clinical researcher. For my MSc qualification, I am writing a dissertation regarding new discoveries in malaria therapeutics, and have successfully completed modules in Pharmacology, Oncology and Statistical Analysis. That is not to say that my tutoring interest is focused solely upon higher education. For my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, I volunteered in a children’s nursery and held group sessions for story time. My A-level grades were A* for Biology, A for Chemistry and A for Psychology. I thoroughly enjoy anatomy and physiology in addition to molecular biology, and love to teach knowledge to the younger generation. In order to enter the accelerated 4 year Medicine programme, I needed to pass ther GAMSAT exam, in which I earned a score of 81 in Section II Written Communications. I am offering tutoring for this section of the GAMSAT exam.

I think in order to improve grades and overall understanding, it is important to highlight any areas of uncertainty because these are what can affect an exam result. My approach is very much about ‘doing’ - going through past papers, finding weak spots and working through solutions together; then comparing with the marking scheme to know exactly what the examiners are looking for. From there, it’s useful to make revision notes in a way that is easy to understand, hoping to combat any issues when encountering a similar question in the future.
Learning techniques I like to develop are mnemonics and mind maps, the latter of which can be added to as lessons go on. This shows a progression of learning and developing ideas/themes, helping the student engage with their subject in a comprehensive and enjoyable way. I also think lessons should be relaxed - it is not ideal if lessons are seen as a chore; we tend to remember what we enjoy.
