About Ilona
I'm an experienced GCSE English teacher with 6 years in the classroom, most recently as a Head of Department and Senior Leader, working in schools across Devon.
I have a 1st Class BA (hons) in English Literature from the University of Exeter and trained to teach right in the classroom through TeachFirst.
I love teaching English and I love working with young people but I also know first hand that for some pupils, a little bit of 1-1 help beyond the classroom can go a long way!
I firmly believe competence breeds confidence for pupils and each tutoring session, I aim to leave my tutee feeling more empowered to nail their next English session than when they started.
I've written curriculums for KS3 and 4, led super group exam classes to whole year groups and worked with hundreds of pupils to help them nail their GCSEs.
My lessons are planned in line with the latest in Education Research (shout out to Daniel Willingham) and with the individual in mind.

Competence Creates Confidence! GCSE or KS3, we got this.
My lessons are structured with the latest findings in education research in mind and are largely guided by the Rosenshine Principles and the work of Daniel Willingham but also, we want it to be fun!
We normally start our 50 minutes with a recap of previous learning and identifying our goals for the session to make sure you feel ready to take on our new learning.
We practise and implement that together until you're ready to have a go on your own.
Lessons are delivered using a variety of PowerPoint and interactive quizzing and videos.
