About Nicholas
As a historian and a documentary maker, I love making history come alive. Having worked on projects ranging from medieval Scotland to World War One I have a wide breadth of knowledge and experience utilising creative techniques to make historical information engaging. I aim to incorporate this flair into our lessons ensuring that they are interesting as well as informative.
Furthermore, after spending five years at the University of St Andrews completing a Master’s and Undergraduate degree, I am well versed in the challenges of historical essay writing. This ranges from how to construct an effective argument to source analysis; challenges which while at first may seem intimidating, can be broken down into easy steps.
I am also a proponent of the digital humanities. With a strong grasp of GIS, having previously worked as a research assistant mapping national boundary changes according to historical maps, I can offer an alternative perspective to studying history which is not just associated with essays. For example, I wrote a computer programme which was used to conduct a gendered study of the Old Bailey records. These skills are useful if you were looking to boost your personal statement for university.

Before we begin our sessions, I believe it is important for us to have an initial meeting. Within this meeting we can set out a series of goals as well as discuss learning styles and needs. This not only helps me to understand who you are, but also gives you chance to have an input about what you want to learn. Equipped with this knowledge I will then construct a series of lesson plans based on your needs. Open lines of communication are important here, if something is not working, I want to hear about it. Furthermore, if you feel like there are areas you are struggling, for example at school, I want you to able to contact me before the class so that I can incorporate it into the tutor session.
I aim for the lessons themselves to be informative but also fun. I won’t just talk at you as I believe discursive exercises are important, helping to ensure that you understand the topic. I enjoy delivering information in creative ways, having previously written and filmed a historical documentary, and I hope I can apply this within our sessions finding various ways to keep them both interesting and engaging. The lessons will always end with a recap where we can talk over what we learnt and what we struggled with. This allows us to revisit areas that you may not have fully understood, whilst also helping draw attention to the key learning points of the session.
