About Emily
Hello, I'm Emily! I am specialized educator, researcher, and writer with expertise in child development and educational best practices, and I am here to help you and your student succeed!
I use current, evidence-based best practices to teach a range of subjects and ages. My specialties are in reading, writing, English, and sciences (including the scientific method, statistical reasoning, evolution, psychology, and linguistics).
My goal is to help students of any age or background succeed at reaching their goals through the development of a positive growth mindset through specific, personalized academic tutoring and compassionate mentoring.
I have been tutoring for almost fifteen years, and have taught students ranging from pre-school through college. My students have learned to read, command basic mathematical principals, understand complex evolutionary theory, write successful college admissions essays, pass top-tier linguistics programs, and succeed in intense academic research settings.
I graduated summa cum laude from a top-tier academic institution with a bachelor's degree in psychology and linguistics and a master's degree in cognitive sciences. I now work in research consulting with Fortune 500 companies that need to understand how to reach and help children.
So then why am I still tutoring? Because it is my passion to help individual students find their sense of purpose and reach their goals. Frankly, I will not succeed at any of my work if I lose touch with the needs of current students and how to help them as individuals.
My tutoring method is simple: meet the student where they are and give them what they need to reach their goals. I believe deeply in my students and in their ability to solve problems and be successful. Together, we find the problems that are inhibiting their success, and we work to address them. Often-times this means filling missing knowledge links, sometimes it means improving a low self-esteem in that subject, and other times it is deeper than even that. I will work with my students to get them where they need to be to reach their goals.
I look forward to learning how I can help you or your student grow and succeed!
It is my true passion to help students succeed in reaching their goals. Their goals can be learning to read, writing a college admissions essay, understanding the scientific method, fostering a growth mindset for a lifetime of learning succees, or any number of other things. Seeing a student of any learning background or with any individual learning need succeed is what drives me in all of my work.
I started teaching when I was six years old in the unfinished basement of my childhood home, where I mimicked the teachers I admired most in teaching my baby nephew and our teddy bears. I had a passion for improving my technique that has never wavered.
I started teaching professionally when I was trained as a pre-school teacher in high school through a hands-on child development course. I then went on to take university level child development and education courses including the Psychology of Education, Learning and Motivation, and more.
I tutored high schoolers and peers through college and went on to teach courses at the college level shortly thereafter. I have been tutoring for almost 15 years, and teaching in one form or another for all of my professional life.
I am both an experienced educator, and a researcher in the science of learning and development. I graduated summa cum laude from a top tier university with degrees in psychology and linguistics, and then went on to receive a Master's degree in cognitive science. My research is centered around reasoning, thinking, and learning. I know how to help students succeed both from personal teaching experience and from evidence-based best practices -not just one or the other. This breadth of knowledge and passion for teaching is the key to my students' success.

It is important that I get to know my students and their needs when we begin working together. I usually begin by asking them about themselves, where they are, where they want to be, and why. Then I ask them what works for them, what doesn't work for them, what they love, and what they don't love. Every student is different and has different needs. I meet students where they are and empower them to reach their own goals and potential.
I have worked with students from all backgrounds and walks of life. From pre-school students learning social emotional skills, to kindergarteners learning to read, from elementary students learning new methods of division, to middle school students learning to proofread, from high school students writing college admissions essays, to college students learning the scientific method and research design. I have helped gifted and talented students, students with special learning or developmental needs, students who were learning English as a second language, and everyone in between.
