  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your background, or did a teacher inspire you to learn?

Mandarin is my native language. My cultural background plus 18 years of formal education up to my master’s degree have built a solid foundation for my language skills. A teacher friend inspired me to become a Chinese tutor. It was through her that I got to know about teaching Chinese to foreign learners. She showed me how rewarding this job is, and that sparked my passion for teaching Mandarin.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I would pick Confucius. As the founding father of education in ancient China, he put forward the educational philosophy of "因材施教(teaching students in accordance with their aptitude)". This idea means adapting teaching methods to match each learner’s unique strengths and weaknesses. I keep this principle at the heart of my Mandarin lessons. Many of his wise sayings are still widely quoted in modern Chinese, which makes him a timeless symbol of Chinese culture and language.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I really like the Chinese idiom “Everything is hard in the beginning”. It perfectly describes the experience of learning Mandarin. Many students feel discouraged at the start when facing unfamiliar characters and tones. This saying reminds me to be patient and tailor my teaching to each learner, just like Confucius’ idea of teaching students in accordance with their aptitude. I help students break down difficult goals into small steps so they can build confidence little by little.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Mandarin acts as a bridge connecting me with the world. On one hand, I love sharing authentic Chinese culture with international students. On the other hand, through these conversations, I also get to learn about cultures from other countries. This two-way cultural exchange is incredibly meaningful to me.
  • What is the main challenge in learning this language, and what can help the process of learning?

For beginners, Mandarin’s four tones and Chinese character writing are the biggest challenges. I use videos, storytelling, character breakdown and analogy methods to teach characters and practice daily speaking. Short, practical homework is also assigned to support students’ learning progress.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I once tutored a student preparing for the HSK 4 exam over several lessons. I shared key strategies and tips to help her get ready. Eventually, she passed the exam successfully. I felt a strong sense of accomplishment when she shared this happy news with me. This experience aligns with my core belief from my previous HR career: helping others achieve their goals.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I love travelling and have visited 98 cities across China. I enjoy exploring places with distinctive local features. Experiencing regional customs, traditions and local food deepens my understanding of Chinese culture. This rich experience allows me to share authentic cultural stories with my students in class.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I combine my patient communication skills from my HR background with flexible teaching methods. I tailor every lesson to match students’ personal goals, whether they want daily conversation practice or HSK exam preparation. I use videos, storytelling and character breakdown to make Mandarin less intimidating. I always encourage students and create a relaxing space for them to practice and make mistakes.
