About Shubham

Whether your child is just starting out or already playing regularly, building a strong foundation can make all the difference in their long-term progress and confidence.

Many children begin chess with enthusiasm but eventually start rushing their moves, missing simple ideas and becoming frustrated when results don't match their effort. With the right guidance, these habits can be avoided—or corrected—early.

I'm Shubham, a chess coach with over 5 years of teaching experience and a peak rapid rating of 2123. I specialize in helping beginners and young students build strong thinking habits, improve tactical awareness and gain confidence on the chessboard.

My teaching is highly interactive and practical. Rather than relying on long lectures and complicated theory, I focus on structured puzzle training, real-game decision-making and simple systems that students can immediately apply in their games.

Several of my students have gone on to compete and earn podium finishes in competitive US scholastic tournaments, including the NC K-12 Championships.

Beyond chess improvement, my goal is to help students develop focus, patience, problem-solving skills and the habit of thinking before acting—skills that benefit them both on and off the chessboard.

My lessons are designed to identify and fix the specific habits that are holding a student back.

One of the core systems I teach is the "Two-Step Blunder Check"—a simple thinking process that helps students stop hanging pieces, spot threats and make better decisions before every move.

Every student receives:

• Monthly progress updates outlining tactical improvement and next goals

• Personalized homework and training plans

• A private Lichess study folder containing lessons, puzzles and past mistakes

• A structured roadmap designed to guide their improvement step by step

  • 1. How did you get into chess?

I first started playing chess when I was around 9 or 10, mostly just casually with friends. I knew how the pieces moved, but I didn’t really understand the deeper side of the game. I became more serious around 15–16, partly because my cousin was very good at chess and got me more interested in it. I started teaching chess after COVID hit, and that’s when I really began to appreciate how much I enjoy helping others learn and improve.
  • 2. Which chess players, games, or aspects of chess have influenced you the most?

A lot of my learning came from watching chess games and streams online. I enjoyed watching different players and seeing how they approached different positions. Over time, that made me more curious about the game and motivated me to study and play more myself.
  • 3. What is the one thing you would like to teach your students?

I think chess teaches you to be comfortable not having an immediate answer. You have to pause, look at the position, and figure things out for yourself. That’s something I want my students to take away from chess.
  • 4. What do you enjoy most about coaching?

What I enjoy most is seeing a student slowly become independent. In the beginning, they may need help with every decision, but over time they start thinking, solving problems, and finding the answers on their own. That’s probably the most rewarding part of coaching for me.
  • 5. What has chess taught you personally?

It’s taught me to look at problems from multiple angles. Your first instinct isn't always the only way, or even the best way, to solve something. Chess has made me more comfortable shifting my perspective and looking for solutions I might have missed at first glance.
  • 6. What are you most proud of in your chess journey?

I’m proud of how far I’ve come as both a player and a coach. Reaching a peak online rapid rating of 2123 is something I’m happy about, but I’m equally proud of seeing my students improve, become more confident, and start thinking independently.
  • 7. What have you noticed about helping young students improve?

Every student is different. Some need more encouragement, some need more structure, and some simply need time to build confidence. I’ve found that when students understand why they are making a move rather than just being told what to do, their improvement becomes much more meaningful.
  • 8. Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

I try to make lessons practical and interactive. I want students to actually think, make decisions, and learn from their mistakes rather than just listen to me explain things. My goal is to make chess enjoyable while also helping them develop better thinking habits.
