About Guillermo

I was born in Venezuela. My parents were Spaniards. I grew up half of my youth in Spain, and the other half in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and a few other places.
I came to the United States at the age of 22 and went to Ohio Wesleyan University to learn English. They had the best ESL program. In three months, I went from beginner level to pass the TOEFL and the Michigan tests. I learned very fast by mixing their great methods with my own. As an industrial engineering student my interest in methods and efficiency led me to one of the most enjoyable successes: Going from not knowing how to ask for the bathroom to having conversations and taking Engineering classes successfully was fantastic.
I graduated with a BS in applied math from The Ohio State University, but I soon realized I was a person's person, not a machine or lab lover. Thus, I switched my life direction and joined the Florida International University Developmental Psychology PhD program, where I became a certified behavior analyst. I went to work with special populations. My job consisted of training parents, teachers, and experts to improve their work with their clients. I developed other programs with normal populations, such as teaching insecure children to thrive socially, and help deaf adults communicate with developmentally delayed adults.
For many years I developed educational and physical programs for special populations. Each program was uniquely adapted to the skills and limitations of the trainee, as well as the skills and limitations of the trainers. The trainers were teachers, speech therapists, physical therapists, musicians, and karate and yoga instructors. Some of these trainers were very high-level in their fields, like Jimmy Wong, three time World Champion in karate.
I always adapt to my student's needs to offer them what is best for them.

My training consists of finding the student's learning weaknesses and strengths, eliminating the weaknesses and bolstering the strengths. I eliminate learning weaknesses by assisting the learner to develop the sub-skills needed for progress.
While the focus of the learning is to advance quickly in using the language, real advancement requires having a basic understanding of the language's grammar. Learning the grammar of a second language is also very useful to review our mother language's grammar. Speaking grammatically always helps us sound very educated. There is no disadvantage to understanding the grammar that creates the language we want to speak.
Additionally I have special little tricks that help in picking up new words. For instance, buy a pocket English-Spanish dictionary that really will fit in a pocket. Or download an app to your phone. Buy a small pocket notebook too. Then, every time you are having a conversation in English, write any word from the conversation that you would like to know in Spanish. As soon as you have time, look for the word in the dictionary. Open google, and request the pronunciation for that word. Repeat it a few times, and do your best to write how you think it is pronounced in your little book next to the English and the Spanish spellings. Do this with no less than 5 words per day.
I have a great deal to offer, so hire me as your Spanish tutor and soon you'll be enjoying speaking and writing in Spanish.
