About Matthew
Hi, I'm Matthew. I'm from Newcastle upon Tyne, and I graduated from LSE this summer with a degree in Mathematics and Economics.
I tutor because I like the diagnostic part of it. When someone is stuck, the cause is usually earlier and smaller than either of us expects, and finding it is a puzzle in itself. I also know from the inside that being good at a subject and being confused by it are not opposites. I was the strongest mathematician in my year at school, then hit courses at LSE where I was properly lost, and what struck me was how little of that was about ability. It was a handful of ideas I had learned as procedure and never actually understood. Nobody had ever checked, because I was getting the right answers.
That's why I'm sceptical when a student tells me they're bad at maths. Usually they have a specific gap that has been quietly compounding, and it's fixable.
What I like about the subjects themselves: maths, once you see why a method has to work rather than just that it does, stops being a list of things to remember. And economics takes something everybody has a rough intuition about, like prices or exchange rates, and gives you the tools to check whether that intuition holds. Often it doesn't, in interesting ways. My own research is on exchange rates, where a sensible-sounding theory has been contradicted by fifty years of data and nobody fully agrees why.
Outside work I play golf, hike and travel, and I'm currently working on two research projects in empirical economics alongside tutoring. Happy to have a chat before any lessons so you can see whether my approach suits you.

MY APPROACH:
I teach for intuition rather than procedure. Most students who are struggling are not short of notes or formulae. They can state the rule but have no mental picture of what it is doing, so the moment a question is phrased unfamiliarly they are stuck. I work from a concrete example you can hold in your head, then vary it deliberately: what happens if this gets bigger, what if the sign flips, why does the answer stop making sense at an extreme. Once you can run those scenarios yourself, the technique tends to follow, and it survives an exam question you have never seen before. This matters particularly in statistics, where students can often run a calculation or a hypothesis test without any real sense of what it is telling them or when it stops being reliable. And in physics, where the maths is usually the easy part and the difficulty is knowing which principle applies. Lessons run off your material, not mine. Bring the problem sheet you are stuck on, the past paper you have just sat, or the topic that has never quite clicked.
HOW LESSONS WORK:
Sessions are usually one hour, with ninety minutes available for undergraduates or intensive exam preparation. Online lessons use live handwritten working on a tablet, so you see every step appear as it is written rather than watching finished slides, and I send you the annotated notes afterwards. In-person lessons work the same way on paper. I spend a good part of each session with you doing the work and me staying quiet. If I am doing all the talking, you will leave feeling like you understood and find out next week that you did not.
MY BACKGROUND:
I graduated from LSE in 2026 with a BSc in Mathematics and Economics. At A-Level I achieved A* in Mathematics and A* in Physics, and A in Further Mathematics, ranked first of 48 in Maths and first of 19 in Physics in my year. At GCSE I achieved grade 9 in both Maths and Physics. My strongest university marks were in statistics and econometrics, and I use statistical methods daily in two ongoing research collaborations in empirical economics at Exeter and Warwick Business School.
WHO THESE LESSONS ARE FOR:
GCSE and A-Level students in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Statistics, including resits and retakes. Undergraduates taking first or second year statistics, probability or quantitative methods. Sixth-formers preparing for quantitative admissions tests. I am equally happy working with someone who has decided they are bad at maths, which is almost never true, and with someone already on an A who wants an A*.
