About Jazz

I’m Jazz, an AI engineer with a Master of Data Science from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Science in Computer Science. Over more than ten years, I’ve built NLP systems, streaming data pipelines, image classification models and LLM-based applications. I bring that experience into every lesson.

My background:
I began my career as a research engineer, building NLP and big data systems with Kafka, Elasticsearch and Apache NiFi. That work led to five patent filings, a peer-reviewed publication.
I later worked as an AI consultant, building image classification models and large-scale data processing on AWS with PySpark.
Most recently, I developed an AI workflow combining semantic search, LLM-based matching and reranking.

Why this matters for you:
You learn from someone who uses SQL, Python, machine learning and Generative AI in real projects, so you’ll know how the skills work outside a classroom.
I know what employers expect, and I’ll help you build skills and projects that meet those expectations.
I explain complex ideas step by step and in plain language, so you can ask anything without feeling judged.

My teaching methodology and techniques
Start with your goal. In the first session, we talk about your level, your course or job target, and your deadlines. Then I build a learning path around that.
Concepts first, then code. I explain the idea in plain language (why a join works, what a model is actually learning) before we write anything. This makes the code easier to remember and debug.
Learn by building. Most of each lesson is hands-on. We work with realistic datasets and small projects, not only isolated exercises.
Real-world examples. I draw on systems I’ve built, such as search, news analytics, data pipelines and LLM workflows, to show how the topic is used in practice.
Debugging together. I teach you to read error messages, test assumptions and fix problems yourself, rather than just handing you the answer.
Regular practice and feedback. You get short exercises between sessions and clear feedback on your code and your thinking.
A typical lesson plan (60 minutes)
Check-in and review (5-10 min): Go over your homework and any questions from the week.
Concept explanation (15 min): Introduce the new topic with simple explanations and examples.
Guided practice (20-25 min): Work through an exercise together, with me guiding and you doing the coding.
Independent challenge (10 min): You try a similar problem on your own, and I give feedback.
Wrap-up and next steps (5 min): Summarize what we covered and set practice tasks for next time.

For project-based learning, such as a machine learning model or a RAG application, the sessions follow the stages of the project: data, modelling, evaluation and presentation.

What sets me apart as a tutor
I’ve done this work professionally. I’ve built production-style NLP microservices, large-scale data processing on AWS, and AI search and matching workflows.
Strong credentials. I hold five patent filings and a peer-reviewed publication from applied R&D, along with two master’s degrees.
Up to date with Generative AI. I work with LLMs, RAG, LangChain and LangGraph, including agents and evaluation, so you learn current tools and not outdated material.
One tutor for the whole path. SQL, Python, statistics, machine learning, deep learning and GenAI are all connected, and I can guide you across them without you needing to change tutors.
Patient and clear. I explain difficult topics step by step, and no question is too basic.
Who the lessons are for
University students in data science, computer science, engineering, business analytics or related programs who need help with courses, assignments, capstone projects or thesis work.
Bootcamp and online-course learners who want extra support to understand and apply what they’re studying.
Career changers moving into data, analytics or AI who need a structured path from the basics to a portfolio.
Working professionals who want to add SQL, Python, machine learning or GenAI skills to their current role.
All levels: complete beginners, intermediate learners who feel stuck, and advanced students working on specific topics such as deep learning, LLM applications.
Specific goals: exam preparation, technical interview practice, portfolio projects, or building your first AI application.

If you want to learn from someone who has built these systems and can explain them clearly, book a first session. We’ll set up a plan for your goals.
