About Gustavo
Hello! My name is Gustavo. I have a deep fascination with the science of life, which led me to earn a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from UBC. I am a genetic engineer by training and I am truly passionate about teaching and sharing my knowledge. While my world is deeply rooted in the lab and scientific research, I am also a very creative person and tutor. You might be surprised to learn that a scientist can also spend his free time composing music on the guitar, drawing, and hiking. I’ve found that this creativity is the key to my teaching: it allows me to break down even the most complex biological topics into clear, visual, and engaging explanations that are easy to understand. My greatest satisfaction comes from seeing that "aha!" moment when a difficult concept finally clicks for a student and seeing them get excited about the beauty of life. I look forward to helping you build confidence and achieve your academic goals!

My Lesson
My first goal is always to figure out what you need!
Our initial sessions are all about getting to know you, your goals, and your specific challenges. We can go over your syllabus or exam study guides together to craft a personalized lesson plan.
This plan is just our starting point—we'll keep building on it and tweaking it as we go, making sure it always matches what you need to succeed.
My Teaching Methodology & Philosophy
I am super passionate about biology because it's the story of us and the world around us! It can get incredibly complex, which is why I love using practical, real-life examples to make things click.
I'm a big believer in learning by doing. A lot of progress happens in your own study time, and I'm here to be your guide—to help you navigate the material and support you in every way I can. We'll build that solid foundation of knowledge together.
Sometimes that means we'll need to go over important vocabulary, but our focus will always be on what helps you the most.
**A friendly disclaimer: My goal is to help you deeply learn and understand the concepts. Just keep in mind that every professor has their own unique way of marking!
A Typical Lesson Plan
* Review & Q&A (5-10 minutes): We'll start by tackling any specific questions you have from your recent lectures or assignments to clear up immediate roadblocks.
* Core Concept Deep Dive (25-30 minutes): This is where we make science come to life. We might draw out the steps of DNA replication, discuss a recent article on CRISPR, or use analogies to finally understand cellular respiration.
* Targeted Practice & Application (15-20 minutes): We will solidify your understanding with practice problems, working together on how to apply your new knowledge to exam-style questions.
* Review & Look Ahead (5 minutes): We'll wrap up by summarizing the key takeaways and briefly looking ahead to your next topic, so you feel prepared and confident for your upcoming classes.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
* A Real-World Scientist's Perspective: As a genetic engineer with hands-on lab and research experience, I offer more than just textbook knowledge. I can explain how these concepts are actually used in modern biotechnology.
* A Passionate Teacher's Empathy: I have been deeply involved in science education through giving guest lectures, teaching AP Biology, and facilitating workshops. I know where students get stuck and have many ways to help you have that "aha!" moment.
* Creative & Diverse Background: My passions for music and art are my secret weapons. They allow me to approach teaching creatively, finding unique ways to explain complex ideas visually and memorably.
Who My Lessons Are For
My lessons are designed for anyone looking to build a deep and lasting understanding of biology. I specialize in working with:
* Middle Schoolers (or even younger!): I am happy to teach complex concepts to younger people and believe they can accomplish amazing things.
* High School Students (including those in AP and IB Biology).
* University & College Undergraduates (especially in first and second-year courses).
* Anyone needing help in specific subjects: Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Ecology, and Botany. (*Even related subjects)
