About Jim
I am an electronic music producer and sound designer with a Master of Music degree from the Fontys Academy of Arts. For 14 years, I have operated as a self-sufficient artist, developing a creative process that covers every dimension of the craft—from the first raw field recording to the final master and the live stage.
My work under the alias Malvae is built on a balance of independent growth and global collaboration. While I have released music with international labels such as Tabula Rasa (San Francisco), Who’s Susan (Amsterdam), Cloudkid (Germany), and Lost Tribe (United Kingdom), I have also focused heavily on building my own audience independently. This approach has allowed me to reach more than 11,000 Spotify followers and accumulate millions of streams through my own self-managed releases.
Experience and Industry Insight:
My teaching is grounded in the practical reality of the music industry. I show you how to navigate the professional landscape using my own journey as a foundation:
Physical and Digital Success: Beyond reaching number 17 on the Spotify Viral 50 charts in the United States, I have released my own vinyl records. These physical releases have been distributed through world-renowned stores including Rush Hour and Concerto.
Screen Features: The technical quality of my productions has led to features on Netflix’s Terrace House Japan and in film productions such as King of the Streets.
Live Performance: I design and perform immersive Livesets at iconic venues, including a headline show at the Melkweg in 2024 and my own Amsterdam Dance Event showcase in 2025.
Creative Sound Design: For my project Amazonas, I captured field recordings in the rainforest to create an album where 90 per cent of the audio originated from nature, reshaped through granular synthesis.
Professional Mentorship: In addition to my private practice, I have shared my technical workflows as an instructor at Wisseloord Studios, helping artists bridge the gap between production and performance.
My Philosophy as a Tutor:
I believe that every producer eventually hits the same walls: the struggle to move past a loop, the frustration of a mix that lacks "punch," or the difficulty of standing out in a crowded market. My approach is solution-oriented and comprehensive, drawing from my experience managing every aspect of a release—from technical engineering to building an independent audience from the ground up.
Whether I am helping you refine a single track or complete an entire EP, my goal is to provide the systems and workflows that allow you to be independent. I specialise in helping producers break through technical bottlenecks so that the software never gets in the way of their vision. I look forward to helping you find your own sonic voice and giving you the confidence to share it with the world.

My sessions provide professional mentorship for artists who want their music to stand up to the highest industry standards. I teach an end-to-end, self-sufficient workflow. We do not just look at software; we focus on your complete sonic identity. I show you how to move from a raw idea to a finished master that is ready for the club, the radio, or the international stage.
Technical Specialisations: From Studio to Stage
I have spent over 14 years mastering Ableton Live as my primary creative environment. I teach you how to build every layer of your music from the ground up:
End-to-End Production: Developing structured systems to move from a basic loop to a finished, dynamic arrangement.
Professional Mixing and Mastering: Achieving a "large" studio sound and industry-standard loudness entirely within the Ableton Live environment.
Hybrid Liveset's With Ableton Live and Analogue gear: I specialise in translating studio tracks into immersive live performances. This includes integrating Modular and Analogue hardware and even performing live visuals using Resolume. I teach you how to build bespoke systems using integrated MIDI mapping to synchronise music in any setup seamlessly.
Advanced Vocal Production: Mastering complex vocal layering, creative processing, and arrangement to make the voice a high-impact lead instrument.
Signature Sound Design: Reshaping field recordings, samples, and synthesis into unique textures that define your brand. Learn to use any sound as a source to create something entirely your own.

Lesson Duration: Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes to allow for deep focus, though this can be customised to your requirements if longer sessions are preferred.
