About Mark

Hello! My name is Mark Garrard, and I have been tutoring for more than seven years at this point. I am an alumnus of Montana State University, where I earned both a Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science and a Master's degree in Mathematics. I am now based in Philadelphia, where I continue to tutor. I've always loved math, even from a young age, and one of the first things that drew me to the subject was fractals, something I still marvel at to this day.

About the lesson

As a tutor, my personal philosophy is that true mastery of material comes not from simply learning formulas, but from understanding the reasoning behind them. I have worked with individuals at all levels of understanding and comfort with the subject matter, and tailor my tutoring style to match each individual student's needs. I strive to make my sessions a place where students feel safe to ask questions, get things wrong, and explore without judgement.

Mark has been one of best Math Mentors working with kids ages 8-14 in both small groups and 1:1. He is very patient, has a variety of facilitation techniques to engage kids, and most of all - has such a deep understanding of math he can make it accessible to kids at all levels.

I would highly recommend working with Mark. He can do foundational tutoring to make sure kids develop the base skills they need for future success, and provide advanced enrichment for those that need more! He worked with our students who were in Pre-Algebra to Calculus courses.
