About Shiraaz

TEACHING = PASSION. I really enjoy teaching so much so that I received a certificate for my contribution to volunteer and tutor students. In Grade 11, I was in the Top 1% for the national IEB benchmark test and I studied Advanced Program Math during high school.

My only focus is to ensure that students understand the content fully. This means that students can receive past paper questions, assistance with their homework and worksheets and even referrals to other helpful resources. A typical lesson will start with the work that the student struggles with and then we will proceed with refining the students' understanding. I am very fluent in English and any student from Grade 12 below is welcome.

  • When did I develop an interest in my subject and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in Maths and Physics from a very young age. As far as I can remember, I have always been passionate about learning, especially in Science-related topics. This passion motivated me to perform academically well throughout my schooling career such that I even became a Maths tutor in my boarding house during high school. As a senior student, I tutored juniors (Grade 8 & 9 students) which sparked my interest in private tutoring. This became my first experience as a tutor and it made me realize that I wanted to also share my passion of learning with others.
  • Tell them more about the subjects I teach, the topics I like to discuss with students (and possibly those I like a little less).

I teach Maths and Physics–only Physics and not Chemistry as both are in Physical Sciences. While I am tutoring these subjects, I am learning them as well since I am triple majoring in Applied Maths, Physics and Computer Science. The topics I like to discuss with students are Algebra, Trigonometry, Functions and Calculus in Maths. On the other hand, I like to discuss topics about Forces, Energy, Motion and Electricity in Physics. I also give suggestions regarding subject choices, university degrees and exam preparations.
  • Do I have any role models? Perhaps a teacher that inspired me?

Back when I was in Grade 6, one of my role models was my Maths teacher. His teaching style was amazing because of his enthusiasm, work ethic and selflessness. He always placed the needs of his students before his own and he was very supportive. I remember when I was selected for the District Maths Olympiad Competition which took place at a school pretty far away. I had transportation issues so my Maths teacher was willing to drive me to the school. He also helped me by giving me advice to solve the Math Olympiad problems and he encouraged me to win. His help was monumental leading to me winning 1st in the competition. My Maths teacher inspired me to become a tutor and I always try to embody his teaching style through my lessons.
  • What do I think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Knowledgeable. A good tutor knows their field of work astoundingly well.
    - Passionate. A good tutor really loves tutoring.
    - Disciplined. A good tutor commits to their lessons and is punctual.
    - Friendly. A good tutor builds a bond with their students.
    - Organised. A good tutor handles their schedule and lessons with ease.
    - Altruistic. A good tutor is selfless and ensures the success of their students.
  • Can I share an anecdote related to my subject or my student days?

When I was the Head of Academics in my boarding house during high school, I was responsible for ensuring that every boarder succeeded academically. One time, a student approached me for help with his Maths test that was on the next day. I assisted him thoroughly and he informed me that he achieved a distinction for his test. From then on, he consistently asked me for help and I always did my best to explain to him about how to solve Math problems. At the end of the term, he informed me that he obtained a distinction. He also expressed much heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for my help. This interaction made me feel proud and added to my motivation for being a tutor.
  • Did I face any difficulties at school or university?

I inevitably face difficulties at university. Due to my assignments, tests, exams and reports; I sometimes struggle to schedule my lessons and commit to them on time. However, I always communicate to my students regularly and let them know of any changes so that there are no further delays.
  • Do I have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of this particular subject, or something completely different?

I love watching football and I am an avid supporter of Manchester United. Teaching is undoubtedly an element of football because coaching is like teaching. Coaches advise their players, analyse their weaknesses and create a plan to win the game. Similarly, tutors do the same so that the students excel in their tests and exams.
  • What makes me a Superprof?

I am a Superprof because I am a passionate and capable tutor. I am committed to ensuring the success of my students through my lessons. I always do my best to help my students thoroughly through a friendly and encouraging teaching style. Lastly, I am well organised and well knowledgeable in all of my subjects.
