About Evie

I work at Imperial College London as a Breast Cancer Researcher. I work closely with breast cancer patients, I talk with them and consent them to the various research studies I manage. The samples I collect from these patients, I analyse in my laboratory. Our research aims to improve the way disease is managed. Whilst I may be biased, I truly believe in the research I conduct and the way it will shape the future of women's lives, so much so I will, within the next year, start my PhD in the field.

During secondary school, science quickly became my niche. I have been very fortunate in knowing from a young age that medical science was going to be where I held a career.
I studied AS level Maths and German and completed A-level Biology, Chemistry and Health & Social Care to A grades. I obtained a First Class degree in Biomedical Science, where I discovered my fascination for cancer and molecular biology. From there, I studied and obtained a Distinction in my Masters, Cancer, Molecular Biology and Genomics. I undertook a 3 month research project in breast cancer, leading me to where I am today, working with a revolutionary breast cancer group at Imperial College.

I enjoyed school and I enjoy learning. My decision to continue down the academic route was for this reason, I am constantly learning and teaching on the job. I aim in the future to hold more teaching responsibilities within the university eventually becoming a lecturer in my field. My decision to start tutoring will not only support my future goals, but it will provide the same reward factor I get from my research; helping others!

Part of the reason why we may find a subject hard, is likely because the person teaching it, is poor at explaining. They have likely entered a rabbit hole and overcomplicated it.

I aim as a tutor to simplify these subjects whilst ensuring all of the important points are made in an easily understandable way. I hope to not overcomplicate and provide an alternative way of thinking and of explaining.

It is important that you, as a student (GCSE, A level or university level) are able to pinpoint the subjects, the lectures or the lessons that you have found personally hard, as and when they arise over the course of the year. Together, we can tackle them and hopefully I can shed a different light on the matter.

My lessons will last up to an hour focussing on a topic or two of your choice (I will need to know in advance some topics which you would like to cover so I can prepare material in advance). We will start by discussing what was taught in your lesson or lecture and what you personally found tricky to grasp. Then I will present a 20-40 minute presentation on the subject (s) hoping that a fresh re-explanation will re-enforce what you as the student, did understand and hopefully clarify any points you didn't understand. I would like you as the student to make notes as I explain, as I find physically writing notes helps to reinforce memory. After my presentation, we can go over my slides and discuss them more informally. This will be an opportunity for you to ask any questions, no matter how small. The last 10-15 minutes will a few questions on the work we've discussed for you to start answering and go away with. These will be styled in accordance to the curriculum and will be inspired from past papers.

If there are serial sessions, which I welcome hugely - then I can review the answers in the next meeting.

(Please note I can work with flexibility, regarding length of lessons and methodology. If this style of teaching does not suit you, then I am more than willing to adapt to your preference, e.g. purely studying exam papers! I have designed my tutoring sessions as so, to reflect the way I used to absorb my lessons and revise, though we all learn in different ways. At the end of the day, it is not about me, it is about you!).

Personal Experience of Tutoring and My Qualifications:
3 x A grade A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and Health & Social Care.
First Class BSc Biomedical Science at Nottingham Trent University
Distinction MSc in Cancer, Molecular Biology and Genomics at Bart's Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University.

I am currently working as a Breast Cancer Researcher at Imperial College London and starting a part-time PhD in the coming year! I work with breast cancer patients and I am often teaching them the science that I am researching. In these moments, I am relaying quite complicated matters into simplistic and easily digestible terms. I believe I have a knack for doing this, a skill which is easily translatable to tutoring.
