About Matthieu
I am a 37-year-old native French speaker born and grew up in the southwest of France, from parents who are both teachers (mathematics and elementary school). Married to an American citizen who grew up in the Midwest, I am well aware of the cultural differences between France and the US. I lived 6 years in Marseille, France where a part of my heart is still, and moved to Chicago in 2022.
On the professional side, I have a master's in Industrial Engineering in France and Quebec. I am also PMP-certified professional with years of experience in engineering, project and contract management at a global firm.

My Approach & Philosophy
I believe language is a tool for connection, not just a set of grammar rules. Connection to the world and others, but most importantly within ourselves. By moving away from "translating in our own head" and toward "thinking in French", we create neuronal connections which help enhance intellectual flexibility in general.
My teaching philosophy is built on Active Learning. Instead of just memorizing conjugations, we use the language during day-to-day activities to solve problems, complete projects, or explore French heritage and culture (such as cooking a French dish, discovering French cheese, or working on a project management / engineering tools).
What sets me apart:
I bring a unique "dual perspective" to our sessions:
(i) Cultural Authenticity: As a native speaker, I share the "real" French—the slang, the etiquette, and the lifestyle. Whether we are discussing the history of Marseille or the nuances of French cheese, you get an insider’s view.
(ii) Professional application: As a PMP-certified professional with a background in engineering and years of experience in engineering, project and contract management both in France and the US, I can help you learn Technical and Business French. I can teach you the specific nuances of project management, contract negotiation, and industrial terminology.
A Typical Lesson Plan (60 Minutes)
Continuous vocabulary learning using pocket dictionary and notebook (written, on paper, helps create and reactivate connections in the brain)
(i) Brain Warm-up & Vocabulary Audit if necessary (5 min)
We start with your Physical Notebook to review terms you’ve collected since our last session. (The Goal? Reactivate neural connections through handwriting and active searching)
(ii) Grammatical Foundation (15 min)
First Retro-Review: A 5-minute "sanity check" on the previous rule to ensure it stuck.
The New Tool: I introduce one new grammatical concept (e.g., the masculine vs feminine, or passe compose). We keep this concise so we can spend more time using it.
(iii) Immersive Activity - The heart of the lesson
The Gourmet Path: Learn the history and etiquette of French cheese (taste and learn about the region, how to cut it) or bake a Quiche Lorraine or Crepes together.
The Professional Path: We dive into contract analysis, risk register creation, or other project management tools and techniques. Or "Frenchify" your LinkedIn profile or resume.
(iv) The Notebook Synthesis
We end where we started. We identify the 5–10 most important words or idioms that surfaced during the activity and add them to your notebook for the upcoming week.
