About Skylar

Hi! I'm from Hong Kong and currently based in Brisbane.

I'm a native Mandarin and Cantonese speaker, and I can also communicate comfortably in English. I use English every day, so I understand the challenges of learning a new language as an adult. I know exactly which sounds or grammar points are tricky for English speakers, because I've been through the reverse process myself. That means I can explain things in a way that makes sense to you, rather than just telling you 'that's how it is.'

I can teach both Cantonese and Mandarin, including Pinyin, pronunciation and tones. I don't just teach textbook phrases. I teach what people actually say on the street, in markets, at family dinners, or in workplace small talk.

I'm patient and easy-going. In my lessons, there's no pressure, no judgment, and no 'wrong' answers. I'll be happy to answer all your questions. No questions are too silly to ask! I'd love my lessons to feel like a conversation with a friend rather than a traditional classroom.

I can teach both children and adults, and I'm happy to adapt my lessons to your level, goals and interests. Whether you're a complete beginner or already know some Chinese, feel free to ask me anything!

About the lesson

Before we even start, I'll ask you a few simple questions: Why are you learning Chinese? Who do you want to speak to? Where will you use it? Your answers will become our roadmap.

I'll tailor each lesson around what you actually want to learn, whether everyday conversation, travel Chinese, or any specific topics! You name the topic, and I'll build a mini-module around it. I also keep a running 'vocabulary bank' just for you, so we always review words you actually care about, not random textbook lists.

My number one goal is to get you speaking and enjoying it. Many learners know lots of words but freeze when a real native speaker talks back. So we'll practice realistic scenarios over and over until they feel second nature. I'll also teach you natural filler words and interjections that make you sound less like a robot and more like a local.

Pronunciation is often the biggest hurdle, but I break it down into tiny, manageable pieces. For Mandarin, we'll work on Pinyin systematically. For Cantonese, we'll tackle the 6–9 tones one by one.

I know that different learners have different moods and schedules. Some days you might feel focused and want a structured lesson with grammar explanations, written exercises, and a clear goal. Other days, you might be tired from work and just want to chat casually over a virtual coffee, and that's perfectly fine too!

- Structured mode: We'll follow a loose syllabus, start each lesson with a quick review, introduce 5–8 new vocabulary words, practice a dialogue, do a pronunciation drill, and end with a homework task (like watching a 2-minute video or writing 3 sentences).

- Casual mode: We'll just talk about your day, your hobbies, the news, or whatever's on your mind, entirely in Chinese (as much as you can manage). I'll gently introduce new words as they come up naturally, correct you subtly, and take notes so we can review next time. No pressure, no tests, just flowing conversation.

Whether you're 8 or 80, I adjust my energy, materials, and explanations to suit you. I never compare you to anyone else. This is your journey, and we'll walk it at exactly the speed that feels comfortable for you.
