About Isabelle

Teaching around the world for 17 years (Nepal, India, Tibet, Italy, Spain, Morocco...), and speaking five languages, I am convinced that each person has different learning ability and expectations. I do believe it is important to take this into account and adapt the methodology accordingly. In any case, the understanding of the phonemes and the melody of the phrasing are the basis on which you may build your knowledge of the French language. For instance, we will refresh together the main pronunciation principles. Then the grammar and finally the familiar expressions of the spoken language and / or the technical language. To practice with more fun, I use videos, mp3, cultural quizzes, as well as extracts from classic or contemporary literary works, newspaper articles, film clips, broadcasts, and Flash news... depending on your level and your needs.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

    Both!
I am French, I grew up in the south of France.
I also got inspired by a couple of passionate teachers as I was finishing my academic studies at the university in Aix-en-Provence.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I would say Yann Arthus-Bertrand, an extraordinary French photographer and environmental activist. He chairs the GoodPlanet foundation in Paris offering workshops to raise awareness concerning our habitat and its current issues. His book « La Terre vue du ciel », and the documentary of the same name has been best sellers all over the globe. You may enjoy watching his last movie « Humans ».While discovering the countless ways of living on this planet, you’ll also improve your understanding of the French language!
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I really love the wishes pronounced after someone sneezing.

After the first sneeze, you say : « À tes souhaits ! » (To your wishes!).
And after the second: «  À tes amours !» (To your loves!)
Usually this calls a response like :  « Que les tiens durent toujours ! » (May yours always last!)

I never heard until now such a sweet wish in other languages. If you heard one, please, let me know !
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

As a francophone living and teaching abroad, I often see how much French culture is fascinating people and how rich the French language is. So, I started to believe that French culture and language should be transmitted and preserved. That’s why I chose to spend my days writing, translating, subtitling, teaching and coaching, happy to share with others.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

French grammar is not easy to catch… Besides that, spoken language is nowadays quite far from the written form.
Two big challenges that make me design my lesson in a friendly way with topics that the student will enjoy. According to my experience, we should firstly focus on the pronunciation with a lot of practice to recognise the sounds of the different French phonemes. To do so, « shadowing » basic sentences and focusing on the intonation and the rhythm used by native speakers is very helpful.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

While leading my professional life, I continue to train myself to improve my knowledge in order to be useful to everyone with good advices and tips.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I lived in Asia for 8 years (China, Nepal, India) where I had no reference points in terms of language. In some remote areas it has been actually very challenging to get understood.... For that reason, I want my students to be well prepared and above all understandable so that they do not experience frustrating situations !
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

My academic education and long experience teaching in various countries give me the ability to provide valuable guidance concerning literature and translation technics as well as efficient tips concerning pronunciation.
I am passionate about language learning and like to think that I pass that enthusiasm on to my students.
