About Mark

I studied at a state school in Derbyshire before achieving a first class degree from Oxford in history and Spanish. I attribute my success to the inspiring work of teachers and tutors from my childhood, and it is this that gave me my passion for education. I now have over five years tutoring experience across a range of subjects (history, modern languages, English, university applications). I have worked both privately and with schools as part of the government National Tutoring Programme. I have a recent enhanced DBS check and have undergone safeguarding training. My favourite part of the job is hearing from happy students on results day.

About the lesson

I offer history tuition for GCSE and A-Level students. I have 5 years of experience teaching history, encompassing all major exam boards (AQA, OCR, Edexcel etc.). I also offer support for history admission tests at top private schools and Oxbridge. I have a track record of proven results, including several A* results at A-Level. Check out some student testimonials below: "I just wanted to thank you again, as I got my last exam results back and I got an A*!! It was really exciting as it is the first A* I've gotten in the course and I couldn’t have done it without your help!" "There is no way that I would have achieved this without your help so I really wanted to say thank you." "I’m so excited, thank you so much for guiding and supporting me, I’m just really glad everything paid off!" No two students are the same, so neither should two lessons be. I enjoy getting to know my students and understanding how they learn. In the first lesson, I set about identifying students' areas of weakness (and strength) and work closely with the student and parent to plan ways to improve. The best history students don't just know the facts: they also have a killer essay technique that impresses examiners. That's why I love bringing in essay questions and planning answers together. History involves a lot of dates, people and events. I'm a fan of using mind maps and timelines to give this content some structure and make links between them. I encourage students to use visual revision to aid their memory.

My son had really struggled with history and panicked that it might affect his university options. Fortunately Mark was able to build his confidence and help him make progress.
